{"id":53214,"date":"2018-06-08T13:30:11","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T13:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/global\/?p=53214"},"modified":"2020-01-06T18:35:15","modified_gmt":"2020-01-06T18:35:15","slug":"update-from-guatemala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/global\/2018\/06\/08\/update-from-guatemala\/","title":{"rendered":"Update from Guatemala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The El Fuego Volcano in Guatemala erupted this past weekend causing 70+ fatalities and missing persons, damage to towns near the volcano, and the closing of highways and the international airport (now reopened) in Guatemala City.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-44378775\">See recent updates<\/a>\u00a0as of June 6.<\/p>\n<p>CGEE programs and staff were\u00a0not\u00a0impacted\u00a0by the eruption. There were no programs running at the time, and our\u00a0program base is\u00a0in Quetzaltenango (Xela) which is located over 100 miles from El Fuego.<\/p>\n<p>INGUAT (The Guatemalan Institute of Tourism) made the following statement: &#8220;All of the major tourist destinations &#8211; such as Tikal National Park, the Semuc Champey Natural Monument, Lake Atitlan,\u00a0Quetzaltenango, and the Pacaya Volcano, among others &#8211; are fully operational and\u00a0are\u00a0not\u00a0under any restrictions&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Augsburg University&#8217;s Center for Global Education &amp; Experience stands in solidarity with those impacted by this tragedy.
