He won in the 14th round when he correctly spelled \u201celectrolyte\u201d and \u201ctransenna.&#8221; He is the son of Carey and Dave Meyer of Shorewood.<\/p>\n<p>Meyer will be sent by Augsburg College with a parent or guardian to the Scripps National Spelling Bee scheduled May 24-29 in Washington, D.C. Other top spellers included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Second place<\/strong>: <strong>Mark Kivimaki, 13, of Valley View Middle School<\/strong>, was eliminated during round 13 for misspelling \u201cbadigeon.\u201d Kivimaki, who was the 2014 champion, is the son of Mary and Bruce Kivimaki of Edina.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third place<\/strong>: <strong>Elise Weier, 13, Shakopee West Junior High School<\/strong>, was eliminated during round 11 for misspelling \u201czircon.\u201d She is the daughter of Cara Weier of Shakopee.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fourth place<\/strong>: <strong>Josephine Spanier, 12, of Anthony Middle School<\/strong>, was eliminated during round 10 for misspelling \u201cneritic.\u201d She is the daughter of Kristine Spanier of Minneapolis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5645\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5645\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/03\/MaxMeyer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5645\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/03\/MaxMeyer-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Max Meyer will advance to the National Spelling Bee.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/03\/MaxMeyer-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2015\/03\/MaxMeyer.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Meyer will advance to the National Spelling Bee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A total of 47 students from 47 schools competed in the spelling bee. Spellers were from elementary, middle and junior high schools, community and magnet schools, private and home schools.<\/p>\n<p>The head judge of the competition was Dennis Bluhm. He has served for 46 years as an elementary school principal and teacher, and 12 years as head judge of the State Spelling Bee.
