Bruss is credited with leading the college\u2019s transition to a four-year, bachelor\u2019s degree\u2013granting institution during his tenure as president.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1976<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Larry Morgan \u201976<\/strong> was presented with the Minnesota Society of CPAs\u2019 Friend of the Association Award at their annual meeting for his help to organization members over the past 10 years. Earlier he was presented with the Lifetime Recognition Award by the Twin Cities Compensation Network. He also served on the Carlson School of Management HR\/IR Alumni Board of Directors.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>1980s<\/h2>\n<h3>1983<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Luverne Seifert \u201983<\/strong> performed the roles of Papa and Warren T. Rat in the world premiere of \u201cAn American Tail the Musical\u201d at the Children\u2019s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. The show was covered in the May 21 New York Times article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/21\/theater\/an-american-tail-jewishness-antisemitism.html\">Onstage in \u2018An American Tail,\u2019 a Family\u2019s Jewishness Comes to the Fore<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1985<\/h3>\n<p>In January, <strong>Ron Huemoeller \u201985<\/strong> was appointed as chief executive officer for Saras Micro Devices, a provider of advanced power delivery solutions for high-performance semiconductor devices.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1989<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Stephen A. Hindle \u201989<\/strong> is regional vice president (Asia) of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Deutsche Bank. His work is based in Singapore.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>1990s<\/h2>\n<h3>1991<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Bill Koschak \u201991<\/strong> was appointed to the advisory board of Reborn Coffee Inc., a California-based retailer of specialty coffee. He is chief financial officer of Calyxt, a plant-based synthetic biotechnology company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1992<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sven Erlandson \u201992<\/strong>, founder of Badass Counseling, was the guest on <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/user-641070382\/episode-146-sven-erlandson-the-bedrock-of-who-we-are\">Episode 146<\/a> of the Good Athlete Podcast, released on January 31.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carol Gronner \u201992<\/strong> is co-producer of \u201cUnzipped: An Autopsy of American Inequality.\u201d\u00a0 The documentary focuses on the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles and the United States and the efforts to enshrine affordable housing as a human right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1993<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Darin Olien \u201993<\/strong>, a plant-based exotic superfoods hunter and founder of 121 Tribe, is the TV host on the Netflix docu-series \u201cDown to Earth With Zac Efron.\u201d He also recently co-founded Barukas, offering a super nut from Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1995<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dave Kerkvliet \u201995<\/strong> was recently named superintendent at Sebeka Public School in Sebeka, Minnesota. He was previously band director at the school for 27 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1998<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ryan Aytay \u201998<\/strong> has been named chief executive officer of Tableau Software. He had previously been serving as Tableau\u2019s president and chief revenue officer and retains his role of president along with his new role as CEO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Osberg \u201998<\/strong> was named chief financial officer and executive vice president of Apogee Enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1999<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Jennifer Grimm \u201999<\/strong> is the new music director of Crooners Supper Club in Fridley, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>2000s<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ross Murray \u201900, \u201909 MBA<\/strong> and <strong>Richard Garnett \u201907, \u201909 MBA<\/strong> received extensive media attention for their hats piled high with flowers at the New York City Easter parade, including on the front page of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/04\/09\/nyregion\/easter-parade-manhattan.html\">New York Times<\/a>. Murray is author of the newly published book, \u201cThe Everyday Advocate: Living Out Your Calling to Social Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miriam Zien-Edgar \u201906<\/strong>, <strong>Kou Lee \u201911, \u201919 MAE<\/strong>, and <strong>Tim Binger \u201911, \u201921 MAL<\/strong> took the St. Louis Park (Minnesota) High School orchestra to San Diego, running into fellow orchestra alum <strong>Suzanne Jokela \u201908<\/strong> along the way. Lee is the St. Louis Park middle school and high school orchestra director, a role that Zien-Edgar held from 2010 to 2018. Binger is the St. Louis Park elementary orchestra director.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2006<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Brooke Hamann \u201906<\/strong> and her father were the subjects of the April 14 article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perhamfocus.com\/community\/progress-all-smiles-all-the-time-hamann-family-dentistry-still-going-strong\">\u201cAll smiles all the time: Hamann Family Dentistry still going strong\u201d<\/a> in the Perham Focus newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2007<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Rachel Engstrom \u201907<\/strong> earned a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of St. Thomas in 2021. She is co-chair of Minnesota\u2019s Behavioral Health Planning Committee and chair of the Governance Committee for the Pro-Choice Minnesota board. She\u2019s also applying to law school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erik Steen Hinderlie \u201907<\/strong> graduated from the University of Massachusetts\u2014Boston with a Master of Science in urban planning and community development. He was the recipient of the Urban Planning and Community Development Graduate Program Director\u2019s Award for Excellence for his public service in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad Wise \u201907<\/strong> was recently sworn in as sheriff of Anoka County, Minnesota. Previously he served as the Coon Rapids police chief.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2008<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Alyssa (Baumann) Ryder \u201908<\/strong> was promoted to senior police crime and intelligence analyst with the Duluth (Minnesota) Police Department in 2022. She also received her subject matter expert certification in call detail record and geolocation analysis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2009<\/h3>\n<p>On March 19, <strong>Kyle Soderberg \u201909<\/strong> was ordained as deacon of outreach and organizational development at Nativity Lutheran Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2010s<\/h2>\n<h3>2010<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ryan Barnick \u201910 MAE<\/strong> was selected as superintendent of the Zumbrota-Mazeppa School District in Minnesota. Previously he served as a principal with Austin Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chad Leonard \u201910<\/strong> is the new mayor of Amery, Wisconsin. He teaches business for the Osceola School District and served on the city council prior to being elected mayor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kelly Roselyne \u201910<\/strong> was promoted to executive director of finance and operations of Terrybear Urns and Memorials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2011<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Elle Thoni \u201911<\/strong> received second place in the Kennedy Center\u2019s Paula Vogel Award in Playwriting competition for their play \u201cMonstrous,\u201d which explores the post-Roe v. Wade era. They are completing an MFA in dramatic writing at Carnegie Mellon University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jennifer (Daniels) Umberger \u201911 MBA<\/strong> was named vice president of marketing and communications for Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. Previously she was associate vice president of marketing and communications and chief marketing and communications officer at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2012<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Christine (Brenno) Fenner \u201912 MBA<\/strong> is a member of a group bringing the Carver County Public Health\u2019s Communities of Belonging initiative to Waconia, Minnesota. Their goal is to work with area residents to create a community where people are truly connected, know each other, and take care of each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vickie (Hargrave) Spyhalski \u201912<\/strong> was appointed minister of First United Methodist Church in Austin, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2013<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Maren Daniels \u201913<\/strong> is author and illustrator of \u201cThe Elements of Art: An Elementary Art Teacher\u2019s Guide to Color, Shape, Texture &amp; More.\u201d She is an elementary art teacher in South St. Paul Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aimee (Nguyen) Norasingh \u201913<\/strong> MBA was recently welcomed to United Way\u2019s Women United Global Leadership Council. Women United is committed to advancing gender equity and expanding access to quality, affordable, educational childcare. Norasingh is a senior relationship executive with Optum Financial.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2016<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sagal Ali \u201916<\/strong> was one of 20 global leaders included in Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity\u2019s 2023 cohort. Fellows meet in-person and virtually to explore health equity topics, bolster their leadership skills, build a global community, and work with AFHE staff, faculty, and mentors. This year\u2019s fellows were chosen from a pool of more than 400 applicants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Muna Mohamed \u201916<\/strong> was featured in the May 27 Star Tribune story, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/basketball-led-muna-mohamed-to-create-activewear-for-muslim-women-and-girls\/600278253\/\">Basketball led Muna Mohamed to create activewear for Muslim women and girls<\/a>.\u201d Her modest activewear brand, Kalsoni, is now sold by retailers such as REI.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2017<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Alexis Halvorson \u201917<\/strong> is head coach of the girls\u2019 lacrosse team at Northfield High School in Northfield, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2019<\/h3>\n<p>The novel, \u201cBlue Lake,\u201d by <strong>Jeffrey Boldt \u201919 MFA<\/strong> received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews and won an award for 2022 Best of Indie Press.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>2020s<\/h2>\n<h3>2020<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Jojo (Khadijo) Abdi \u201920 MFA<\/strong> is teaching screenwriting at Metro State University. She recently served as guest journalist for The Forum on Workplace Inclusion. She also has studio space in Midtown Global Market for a new project based on interviews in the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy Aguilar \u201920<\/strong> is new co-director of diversity and inclusion for AIGA Minnesota, a professional association for people working in the field of design, including graphic design and web design.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2021<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Karina Kafka \u201921<\/strong> has made a film called \u201cA Mother\u2019s Love.\u201d This 26-minute documentary focuses on missing and murdered Indigenous women through the story of one mother\u2019s search for her daughter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simon Redstone \u201921<\/strong> recently directed a short film called \u201cSister Diane\u201d and accepted a position working in the film\/marketing\/advertising industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2022<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Alexa (Turcios) Carrera \u201922<\/strong>, a student in the Master of Science in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy program at the University of Minnesota\u2014Twin Cities, was featured in the April 21 University of Minnesota news story, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twin-cities.umn.edu\/news-events\/advocate-energy-justice\">An advocate for energy justice<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1970s 1975 Dan Bruss \u201975 received the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award from Bethany Lutheran College, where he is president emeritus.
