{"id":4222,"date":"2014-07-22T14:25:56","date_gmt":"2014-07-22T14:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/?p=4222"},"modified":"2025-04-02T19:22:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T19:22:52","slug":"game-time-lifetime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/2014\/07\/22\/game-time-lifetime\/","title":{"rendered":"From game time to lifetime"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4301\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/07\/Game-time-to-lifetime.jpg\" alt=\"Game time to lifetime\" width=\"930\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/07\/Game-time-to-lifetime.jpg 930w, https:\/\/www.augsburg.edu\/now\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/07\/Game-time-to-lifetime-300x95.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">August 18 marks the 100th birthday of legendary Augsburg College coach <strong>Edor Nelson \u201938.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Nelson is one of the elite Augsburg coaches who profoundly impacted the College\u2019s athletic programs and whose influence echoed in the lives of student-athletes beyond their competitions on athletic fields, rinks, and courts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">At Augsburg, the legacies of renowned coaching staff and faculty live on in the facilities that carry their names, are exhibited in their own philanthropy, and can be seen in the generosity they inspire in others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Bruce Nelson \u201971,<\/strong> son of Edor Nelson, said coaches such as his father grew up in an era in which sacrifice for the greater good was common, and coaches played larger roles in the lives of student-athletes than simply running drills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThese coaches taught student-athletes about commitment and that a team is bigger than the individuals,\u201d said Bruce, who lives out what he learned\u2014in part\u2014by serving as president of the Augsburg A-Club, a service organization of former and current Auggie student-athletes and friends of the College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Bruce knows from first-hand experience that student-athletes see, understand, and appreciate the ways their mentors continue to influence their lives as they move on to new opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cVery few athletes, when they\u2019re older, talk about wins and losses. They talk about camaraderie, support, and struggles,\u201d Bruce said. \u201cThey remember that my dad helped them get jobs out of college\u2014that the support didn\u2019t stop after graduation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Nelson is one of a group of long-tenured coaches who are pillars in the Auggie community. Others include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Ernie Anderson \u201937<\/strong>\u2013Coach of Augsburg\u2019s men\u2019s basketball team from 1947-1970, Anderson also was athletic director for 33 years from 1947-1980. His tenure inspired the Ernie Anderson Court in Si Melby Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Marilyn Pearson Florian \u201976<\/strong>\u2013Coach of Augsburg\u2019s women\u2019s volleyball team from 1981-1998, she also was the women\u2019s athletic director from 1988-2007. She increased the number of women\u2019s sports and of female student-athletes.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Edor Nelson \u201938<\/strong>\u2013An Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame member, Nelson coached football from 1947-1969 and baseball from 1946-1979. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augsburg\u2019s <\/span>outdoor athletic field bears his name.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Lavonne Johnson Peterson \u201950<\/strong>\u2013\u201cMrs. Pete\u201d led the \u2018Auggiettes\u2019 basketball team in 13 unbeaten seasons from the 1950s to the 1970s and was an instructor until 1980. Augsburg named the health and physical education center in her honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Joyce Anderson Pfaff \u201965<\/strong>\u2013A pioneer in women\u2019s athletics and in the establishment of varsity women\u2019s sports, Pfaff was Augsburg\u2019s first women\u2019s athletic director, serving from 1972-1998. She also taught for 43 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Ed Saugestad \u201959<\/strong>\u2013Coach of the men\u2019s hockey team from\u00a01958-1996, Saugestad\u2019s championship teams claimed three NAIA national and six MIAC state titles. One of Augsburg\u2019s hockey rinks is named in honor of Saugestad, who passed away in March.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Jeff Swenson \u201979<\/strong>\u2013Wrestling team coach for 25 years, Swenson has served the past 10 years as athletic director. Auggies brought home 10 national wrestling titles under his leadership, and the wrestling wall of fame bears his name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today the commitment of these coaches continues to be honored through philanthropic initiatives by alumni whom they inspired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Corky Hall \u201971,<\/strong> Augsburg\u2019s first men\u2019s hockey All-American, is challenging fellow student-athletes-turned-Augsburg-alumni to raise funds for a named space in the Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR) to honor Saugestad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Mark Rabbe \u201953,<\/strong> one of Edor Nelson\u2019s baseball players, is funding a faculty office in the CSBR to honor the coach.
