love living on and green
The Department of Residence Life is committed to the 2016-2019 Augsburg University Action Plan for sustainability, and of course, living local.
Residence Life’s Greenies
A special shout out to the following residential students, who have made our residence halls more environmentally friendly!
Emma Blom- 2016-2017: Compost Initiatives
Mare Odal – 2015-2016: Water Conservation
You can be one of Residence Life’s Greenies, too! Do you have an idea that you’d like to see through to fruition? Contact the Department of Residence Life so we can support your ideas, residencelife@augsburg.edu
Augsburg’s Commitment to Practices and Operations
Waste Management in the Residence Halls
Starting in the fall semester of 2017, the Department of Residence Life, in collaboration with the CSO (Chief Sustainability Office), Facilities Management and Student Government’s EAC (Environmental Action Committee), provides trash, recycling, and compost bins with each unit on campus. Residents can participate in these programs by bringing bagged waste, bagged compost, and clean recycling from their units to the appropriate receptacle in their building. Specific composting bin liners will be provided free of charge and can be picked up at the Department of Residence Life’s Urness/Mortensen lobby office.
Residence Life has recently completed a student driven initiative to put new mattresses in all of our residence halls with no springs and recycled foam from Wisconsin.
Carbon Footprint
The Department of Residence Life seeks to support initiatives that engage students in reducing their carbon footprint. Begin fall of 2016, all first year residential students are dedicated to leaving cars behind and commit to a first year experience with urban transportation options. To assist, the Department of Residence Life and Student Government’s EAC (Environmental Action Committee) added three new indoor bike parking: located in Urness, Mortensen, and Anderson Hall. Please review Augsburg’s transportation webpage for more information on subsidized bus passes.
Residence Life and Facilities Management have been steadily replacing all lights in the halls with LED lighting and providing timed off switches in common areas.
Water Conservation
Take Back the Tap! Join the Augsburg community in using bottle filling stations (located in Urness, Mortensen, and Anderson) or faucets in your on campus apartments. Reduce your plastic bottles, preserve and conserve local water sources, and ensure water is a renewed resource for all.
