For currently enrolled students, please be advised that Student Financial Services staff members who obtain or receive information about conduct that reasonably may constitute sexual misconduct, abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or harm to oneself or another individual must report that information to the Title IX Coordinator. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, please only include the information you are comfortable sharing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Special Circumstance Application<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A special circumstance is when the information provided on the FAFSA form is not reflective of the family&#8217;s financial situation. A financial aid administrator may then adjust a student&#8217;s FAFSA data to more accurately reflect the family&#8217;s situation. This may or may not result in an increase in\u00a0gift aid available to you.<\/p>\n<p>Special Circumstance requests are considered each spring through summer prior to the start of the upcoming academic year.\u00a0 In order for your Special Circumstance to be reviewed you must submit an application\u00a0as well as all additional requested information. \u00a0 If you feel you have circumstances that warrant special attention by our office, please let us know by sending an email, describing your situation, to &#x73;t&#x75;&#100;&#x65;&#110;&#x74;&#x66;i&#x6e;&#97;&#x6e;&#99;&#x65;&#115;&#64;&#x61;&#117;&#x67;&#115;&#x62;&#117;r&#x67;&#46;&#x65;&#100;&#x75;.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2026-2027<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2627\/2627SCIndependent.pdf\">2026-2027 Special Circumstance Application for an Independent Student\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2627\/2627SCDependent.pdf\">2026-2027 Special Circumstance Application for a Dependent Student\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2025-2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2526\/2526SCIndependent.pdf\">2025-2026 Special Circumstance Application for an Independent Student\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2526\/2526SCDependent.pdf\">2025-2026 Special Circumstance Application for a Dependent Student\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Unusual Circumstance Application<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An Unusual Circumstance refers to students who are considered <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/2526\/help\/need-parent-info\">dependent by Federal Student Aid<\/a> but are unable to provide parent information on the FAFSA. Examples of unusual circumstances include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Estrangement from parents due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, unsafe home environment, and etc<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Students having been granted refugee or asylum status and are unable to contact their parent(s)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Parental incarceration<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Human trafficking, as described in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (22 U.SS.C. 7101 et seq.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following situations are <strong>NOT<\/strong> considered unusual circumstances for financial aid purposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Parents refusing to contribute to the student&#8217;s education or provide information on the FAFSA<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Parents do not claim the student as a dependent for income tax purposes<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>2025-2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2526\/2526UnusualCircumstances.pdf\">2025-2026 Unusual Circumstance Application for students requesting a dependency override<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>2024-2025<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2425UnusualCircumstances.pdf\">2024-2025 Unusual Circumstance Application for students requesting a dependency override<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph fsa-header paragraph--type--header paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<h2 id=\"pid_1385955\" class=\"text-left\"><strong>Dependent Students without Parent Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--paragraph paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<p id=\"\" class=\"indent-0 full-indent- bottom-space-\">Dependent students whose parents refuse to support them OR refuse to complete the FAFSA are not eligible for a dependency override, but they may be able to receive a dependent level Direct Unsubsidized Loan only. Students in this situation should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indicate this situation on their FAFSA, and<\/li>\n<li>Submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.augsburg.edu\/enroll\/Forms\/2526\/2526noparentsupport.pdf\">Special Circumstance Application for Dependent Students Without Parental Support<\/a> OR provide a signed and dated letter from their parent stating their refusal to provide support and\/or complete the FAFSA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"indent-0 full-indent- bottom-space-\">Students who are unable to provide a signed\/dated letter from their parent may provide documentation from a third party (teacher, counselor, mentor, religious worker, and etc).<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent-0 full-indent- bottom-space-\">Please contact &#115;&#x74;u&#x64;&#x65;&#110;&#x74;f&#x69;&#x6e;&#97;&#x6e;c&#x65;&#x73;&#64;&#x61;u&#x67;&#x73;&#98;&#x75;r&#x67;&#x2e;&#101;&#x64;u with any questions or concerns about this process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>To Receive Additional Unsubsidized Direct Loan Funds (Dependent students whose parents may be unable to borrow a Federal Parent PLUS Loan)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Parents of dependent students should first apply for a Parent PLUS Loan.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the loan is denied, students will be eligible to receive an additional Unsubsidized Direct Loan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If a parent is approved but unable to borrow the loan due to an economic hardship, the student may qualify for an additional Unsubsidized Direct loan. The student should e-mail &#115;&#x74;u&#100;&#x65;&#110;&#x74;f&#105;&#x6e;a&#x6e;&#x63;&#101;&#x73;&#64;&#97;&#x75;g&#x73;&#x62;&#117;&#x72;g&#46;&#x65;&#100;&#x75; to let a counselor know that the family does not intend to take out the Parent PLUS Loan.
