High School National Topic Policy Debate

In this program, students join other debaters nationwide in debating the affirmative and negative sides of a policy resolution selected by a national committee.

Policy Debate – 2021-2022 Topic

“Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States.”

(View more about this year’s debate topic on the NSDA Website: speechanddebate.org/topics/)

Students gain crucial research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills at all levels while competing at up to 14 regional tournaments from September to December. Debaters are paired into partnerships (2-person teams) and compete against schools from urban and suburban Minnesota at weekend tournaments. Participants have a chance to compete in the MSHSL State Debate Tournament in January and national tournaments in spring, including the National Speech and Debate Association Championship, the NAUDL Championship Tournament, and more.
