2020 Minnesota Debate and Advocacy Workshop Faculty and Administrators

High School Policy Debate Staff

Dr. David Cram Helwich, Camp Director: Dave is the Director of Forensics at the University of Minnesota. He has been actively involved in debate for over 25 years, including the last 18 as a full-time college coach, where he has cleared teams at every major intercollegiate tournament, including the NDT. He also has considerable high school and collegiate institute experience, including founding two high school debate workshops (MDAW and the Wyoming Forensics Institute) and serving as a lab leader for the past 20 summers.

Jake Swede has served as the Program Director of the MNUDL for four years after previously coaching at Patrick Henry High School while attending college. He has experience launching and growing debate programs in China. He has a BA in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota.

Jenna Randerson brings over 15 years of education experience, including: supporting students, developing curriculum, training teachers, and managing her own school in Argentina. Jenna is trained in culturally responsive Mental Health First Aid and has extensive experience working with Latinx communities. She has a BA in Spanish from the University of WI – Madison and is attaining her Master’s in Education through Augsburg University. Jenna is looking forward to helping campers develop their confidence and capacities to be agents of change!

Middle School Policy Debate Staff:

Alix DeMarre has been a leader at MDAW for eight years. She was a state-qualifying debater in high school, and went on to coach both at Roseville Area High School for four years as well as for middle school policy debate in Minneapolis. Alix is a graduate of Hamline University with degrees in ESL Education, Political Science, and Applied Linguistics.

Congressional Debate Staff:

Ross Eichele is dedicated to helping each student become his/her best. He coaches at Eagan High School and focuses on helping students polish their natural skills while fostering an environment in which they can develop even more skills. The goal is to help students create a mindset which prepares them for any situation in a session. Ross has coached multiple congressional debaters to the final rounds of The Minnesota State Debate Tournament, The Glenbrooks, The MinneApple, The Blake Holiday Tournament, The Blake Round Robin, The Cal Invitational at Berkeley, Harvard, as well as the NSDA National Tournament. He is the Librarian/Media Specialist at Eagan High School and also serves as the head speech coach.

Middle School Speech Staff:

Ross Eichele is the head speech coach at Eagan High School. He believes in developing and fine tuning performance skills to appeal the widest array of audiences. Each speaker has unique skills and fears: the goal is to help students polish their skills and embrace their fears to achieve excellence. Ross looks forward to working with middle school campers to help them become confident leaders who speak well. He is the Librarian/Media Specialist at Eagan High School and also serves as the congressional debate coach.

Rebecca Froehlich competed in speech and parliamentary debate with a primary focus on limited preparation and public address events while earning her BFA from the University of South Dakota. She currently is an assistant speech coach at the University of Minnesota. She formerly coached Informative Speaking and Great Speeches at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, MN. Rebecca looks forward to working with middle schoolers as they use speech to amplify their voices and explore what they are passionate about.

Administrative Staff

Amy Cram Helwich, Executive Director, MNUDL: Amy is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Urban Debate League, and the administrative director for camp. Amy is the person to talk to about scholarships, registration, and general questions about camp. During camp, Amy is the person to talk to you if you are having trouble reaching your child or if you want to take your child off campus for a dinner out or other appointment. This will be her sixth MDAW. Amy has over 13 years in non-profit management and youth development, prior experience including: Women’s Foundation of MN, Children’s Safety Centers, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration, a B.S. in Political Science, and debated in both high school and college.
