Diana Reyes ’26 is among the student civic leaders recently named to the 2025–26 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows by Campus Compact.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education. The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes students who stand out for their commitment to creating positive change in communities locally and around the world. Fellows are nominated by Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors, who are invited to select one outstanding student from their campus each year.
Reyes is a social work major and Bonner Community Leader student intern, through which she helps create internship opportunities with off-campus organizations. She also works with Augsburg’s Latinx Student Services and spent a semester in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, for “Social Work in a Latin American Context,” a program hosted by Augsburg’s Center for Global Education and Experience.
“I’ve learned from an early age that meaningful change starts with oneself,” Reyes said in a personal statement. “While growing up in church, I was actively involved and developed a deep sense of purpose and responsibility to contribute to my community. I began to think about who I wanted to be—one who cares deeply about the people around me. The leadership roles I’ve taken on in college helped me gain confidence and see a clearer understanding of what kind of leader I want to be—someone who listens, supports, and cares.”
Campus Compact provides Newman Fellows with a year of learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional, and civic growth. Each year, fellows participate in numerous virtual training and networking opportunities to help provide them with the skills and connections they need to create large-scale positive change. The cornerstone of the fellowship is the Annual Convening of Fellows, which offers intensive in-person skill-building and networking over the course of two days. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
“Diana builds connections and tools in her academic work that provide meaningful support for community members,” wrote President Paul C. Pribbenow in his nomination letter. “She is a leader on several committees on campus as well, facilitating ethical and equitable relationships between faculty, students, and the communities she works alongside.”
“It is an honor to welcome this group of accomplished and dedicated students to the Newman Civic Fellowship,” said Campus Compact President Bobbie Laur. “As higher education faces unprecedented challenges, these students exemplify the power and possibility of civic and community engagement on campus. As they emerge as the leaders of tomorrow, we are proud that this fellowship will be part of their story. From a variety of institutions and with diverse backgrounds and experiences, these Fellows represent a bright future for public problem solving.”
