Augsburg-connected startup highlighted by MinnPost

MinnPostMinnPost news featured students and staff from Augsburg College and other local universities who collaborated on a startup organization, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf, which opened a women’s clothing and accessory store.

The store — aptly named Sisterhood Boutique — is nestled in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis and features donated fashions at affordable prices.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf received funding for their startup venture from several Twin Cities organizations including Fairview Health Services and the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, as well as support from Augsburg.

Star Tribune features Midnimo partnership

Minneapolis Star TribuneThe Cedar Cultural Center will host a free concert by Taleex Band on October 31 as part of the Midnimo series, a two-year partnership with Augsburg College to build cross-cultural awareness, knowledge, and understanding of Somali culture through music. The Star Tribune recently promoted the show and Midnimo programming in the article, “Twin Cities band Taleex raises voices for Somali pride.” As noted in the article, the Taleex performance also will include sets by non-Somali groups. Bob’s Band, a brass jazz group led by long-time Augsburg College Music Department faculty member Bob Stacke ’71 and comprised of several Augsburg alumni and current students, will augment Taleex Band’s sets.

Augsburg receives Carnegie Community Engagement classification

carnegieAugsburg College was recently selected by the Carnegie Foundation to receive the classification for Community Engagement. This classification affirms that a university or college has institutionalized community engagement in its identity, culture, and commitments. It also affirms that the practices of community engagement are aligned with the institution’s identity and form an integral component of the institutional culture.

There are three categories in the classification: curricular engagement, outreach and partnerships, and a category for both curricular engagement and outreach. Augsburg received the classification for both curricular engagement and outreach and partnerships.

In Minnesota, the University of Minnesota, University of St. Thomas, and Winona State received the same classification in 2006; Metropolitan State University and Augsburg were the only institutions to receive the classification in Minnesota in 2008.
