Mardi Gras Madrigals

Every spring at Augsburg College, the Goliard Society of Medievalists, a student club, hosts a big party to celebrate the midwinter carneval before Lent. It’s Mardi Gras Madrigals!  Huzzah! This annual event always features jugglers and musicians, storytellers and poets, and a full medieval feast — eaten without utensils, of course.

This year (2013), Mardi Gras Madrigals takes place on Tuesday, February 12 in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Box office opens at 6 PM, but it’s best to purchase tickets on-line in advance. Madrigal choirs from area high schools have been specially invited to join in the festivities by sharing their musical talents. The choirs will be joined by members of the internationally acclaimed Rose Ensemble.

In addition to the beautiful music, there’s plenty of silliness and merriment as well. A child from the audience will be crowned king or queen of the feast, and a high-ranking grown-up will be chosen to play the fool.

If your high school madrigal group would like to be invited, or if you’d like more information, please contact Phil Adamo at adamo@augsburg.edu.
