This course is modeled after the English 396 Internship in
Teaching Writing course currently offered at Augsburg College. As required in
that internship, this course requires students to prepare, deliver, and assess
their oral presentation for Thai students in both small group and whole class
settings. In addition, students will review literature about Thai history and
culture and will read about pedagogy effective for teaching ELL (English
Language Learners) students. Each
Augsburg student will write aa pre-trip essay, daily
journal responses while in country, and a final paper integrating their research
and reflection about the experience. Upper division students will also prepare
an annotated bibliography. In Thailand, students spend time in Bangkok and
Chiangmai and will work with
secondary Thai students in a Thai government school in the rural village, Prachuab Kirikhan,
where they will teach English to these students in their English
classes.
Fulfills: Augsburg Experience, Writing Skill, Speaking
Skill. It counts as an English elective and provides the Intercultural
Perspective (old requirement).
