What is SOAR?
Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR) is a required two-day overnight orientation experience for all incoming first-year students who will be starting at Augsburg College in fall 2015. SOAR is designed to help with the transition to Augsburg and allows students to register for fall classes; meet fellow classmates, faculty and staff; learn about college resources and services; explore the campus and surrounding community; obtain an Augsburg College student ID; and get a taste for life on campus.
Are students required to attend SOAR?
SOAR is required for all incoming first-year students who will be starting at Augsburg College in fall 2015.
What do students need to do prior to attending SOAR?
Academic Advising will be reaching out to incoming first-year students in June and July to review any placement tests in writing, math, or language that are needed before and during SOAR. Academic Advisng will also help students activate their Augsburg email accounts and prepare students for selecting and registering for their fall classes at SOAR. What should students bring to SOAR?
- Alarm clock
- Calculator for Math Placement Test (graphing
- Comfortable walking shoes*

Are students required to stay overnight during SOAR?
All incoming first-year students who will be starting at Augsburg College in fall 2015 are required to stay overnight on campus during their SOAR session (SOAR I, II, & III only) regardless of their resident or commuter status.
Where do students stay overnight during SOAR?
Students will be staying overnight in Urness Hall, a first-year student residence hall. Please note: Housing is not available on campus for parents or siblings.
Can parents attend SOAR?
SOAR is specifically designed for incoming first-year students and so parents are invited to attend Parent SOAR, an optional two-day orientation experience. Parent SOAR runs concurrently with the student SOAR sessions (SOAR I & II only). There is also an Evening Parent SOAR option available for those parents who cannot attend one of the two-day Parent SOAR sessions but who still want to participate in orientation. Parents should go to augsburg.edu/cao/orientation/parent-soar to complete an online registration form and then choose from one of the following three sessions:
- Parent SOAR I: July 24-25, 2015
- Parent SOAR II: July 27-28, 2015
- Evening Parent SOAR: July 28, 2015
The Parent SOAR and Evening Parent SOAR Registration Deadline is Friday, July 10, 2015!
Can siblings attend SOAR?
Unfortunately there is no programming available for siblings during SOAR, Parent SOAR, or Evening Parent SOAR.
When and where do students check-in for SOAR?
Check-in and other pre-orientation activities will take place between 8:00-8:45 a.m. on Day 1 of each SOAR session in the Christensen Center Lobby. Required SOAR programming will conclude by 1:00 p.m. and optional SOAR programming will conclude by 2:30 p.m. on Day 2 of each SOAR session.
Where can students park during during SOAR?
Students can park free of charge in any designated Augsburg College parking lot during the hours of their SOAR session. A map of parking lots on campus can be found at augsburg.edu/about/map.
During each SOAR session students will be exploring different communities, businesses, organizations, and campus partners surrounding the Augsburg College campus and will be traveling varying distances by walking and/or using public transportation. Any students with a disability-related concern about participating in this activity or who need to request reasonable accommodations for any other part of SOAR should contact the CLASS/Disability Services Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 612-330-1053. Contacting CLASS two or more weeks prior to your SOAR session will help ensure that all necessary arrangements will be available.

Auggie Days, the second part of the required orientation experience for first-year students, starts Friday, August 28 and runs until Friday, September 4, 2015. (Aug. 28-31 is required Auggie Days programming and Sept. 1-4 is optional Auggie Days programming.) STUDENTS SHOULD MARK THEIR CALENDARS!
