THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER is the fourth longest river in the world and Minneapolis is the first major city it comes to.  The river cuts through the Twin Cities separating Minneapolis from Saint Paul.  It separates the University of Minnesota into an east and west campus.  Some of the shore is parkland, some is residential, some is recreational and other parts are industrial.   For the most part it winds its way silently through Minnesota only broken up by one small waterfall, Saint Anthony Falls - which still requires a lock and dam system for navigation.
