Mallory Alekna is Assistant Professor of Music, Human Development, and Learning at Augsburg University, where she and the undergraduate students collaboratively explore equity in and through music education. Before moving to Minnesota, Mallory supported students and communities in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Arizona. These experiences included a wide variety of musical practices in pre-kindergarten through graduate levels, and in public and community settings. Mallory has presented at state, regional, and national conferences on topics related to equity and string education. She is interested in contemporary curricular inquiry, creative placemaking, and critical response process as potential tools for change in music education.
Mallory is currently completing her Ph.D. in Music Learning & Teaching from Arizona State University. Her dissertation is an opportunity to center the voices of underrepresented music students and to learn from them about the ways in which they experience inclusion, marginalization, and exclusion within their school of music.
