As chair of Communication Studies and director of the Film program, I have a long history with Augsburg. I have a deep passion for experiential learning. I agree with Sophocles who said, “One must learn by doing the thing: for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.”

The Communication Studies major has been designed to provide you with the necessary theory for application in a variety of communication settings-from

interpersonal relationships to small groups and from organizations to mass audiences.

What better way to apply what you’ve learned than through an internship where you experience firsthand what it means to work in your chosen field? This is especially important in helping you determine a career path that is right for you.  Our graduates go on to law school, graduate school, education, media performance and production, public relations, etc.. You will have confidence in your abilities because you will have tested them in the real world.

Our department believes in the value of global education. Our majors are encouraged to study abroad for a semester. We have determined which schools around the world offer courses that will transfer to Augsburg. Our International Programs office can help you determine which program is right for you.

Each faculty member in our department is committed to assuring that your Augsburg experience provides you with the opportunity to strengthen your knowledge and skills in the liberal arts. Communication is not just about public speaking. It is about being able to make yourself understood by a variety of audiences, be it an audience of one or thousands.  We believe that the study of communication will be of benefit to anyone wanting to interact more effectively with the world around us.
