An active soloist, chamber musician, woodwind doubler, reed maker, and private teacher, Ariel Detwiler has developed a multi-faceted career in the Twin Cities. In addition to Augsburg, Ariel holds the position of Adjunct Bassoon Instructor at Dordt University and Northwestern College – Iowa. Currently pursuing her DMA in Bassoon Performance with a secondary emphasis on Music Education, she also instructs the Woodwind Techniques course at the University of Minnesota. Receiving a BM from DePauw University and an MM from Indiana University, Ariel’s bassoon teachers include Norbert Nielubowski, John Miller, William Ludwig, Kathleen McLean, Angela Bergmann and Kara Stolle. Ariel is an active contrabassoonist, makes and sells all of her own reeds, and arranges chamber music for various chamber groups. Her interest in new music and creative performance fueled the commissions of more than 10 new pieces for the unique combination of Horn and Bassoon, specifically for her group Duo 231. Ariel will complete her DMA at the University of Minnesota at the end of the 2019/2020 academic year.
