African American Studies – Shannah Henderson Amare

Shannah Henderson-Amare’s favorite hobby as a child was to play school. This led her to being nicknamed “teach” by her uncle. Migrating from Guyana to America was life changing, but her school experience helped her transition in a new environment. This would later shape her understanding of the power and importance of schools. Believing that a student’s learning is shaped by everyone that child encounters every day from the teachers to the custodians, is something that has stayed with her over the years. Shannah is of the belief that schools are families and parents are encouraged, supported, and made to be part of the school family. The learning that happens in schools impacts how a child sees themselves, their family situations and the world around them. In her twenty plus years of education this philosophy has not wavered.

In 2015, Shannah was appointed as Assistant Principal of a High School in Brooklyn, New York. As an administrator, Shannah continued to be an AP coordinator in the years she was not teaching Advanced Placement classes. Shannah is skilled at creating, implementing and promoting a sustainable college culture with AP exams as a focus. Her selection to be part of the Year 1 AP African American Studies pilot has allowed her to support students, teachers and school districts looking to implement AP African American Studies. Shannah is currently supporting teachers and administrators in her school district. Shannah has hosted in person and virtual inter-visitations with a focus on rigorous and engaging lessons for all learners. This support now includes visiting other schools to provide instructional support and resource alignment for student success. As an active school administrator, current AP African American Studies and district support, she provides the unique perspective of being able to support through multiple lenses.
