SUMMER INSTITUTE
The Paideia (pie day a) approach to teaching and learning is built around the development of a student to think critically, listen carefully, question thoughtfully and make education relevant. This approach can be applied to a variety of educational subjects and settings. The Institute is open to teachers in all subject areas and at all grade levels. You will develop new skills necessary to improve your teaching and fostering a learning environment through interactive workshops. We focus on coaching for skill development and Socratic seminars for enhancement and understanding of ideas.
What are the results?
Teachers give Paideia top grades for:
- Increasing critical thinking skills and reading comprehension
- Improving oral and written communication skills
- Focusing more time on integrated curriculum
- Improving participation of students across cultural backgrounds
- Changing the dynamics between teacher and learning
- Contributing to better attendance and engagement

SCHOLARSHIPS
We offer need-based scholarships for people who want to use the Paideia approach in their classrooms/schools but lack the personal funds or school funds to attend our summer institute. The Patricia F. Weiss Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a practicing K-12 teacher, and the Marie O. McNeff Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a current Augsburg graduate or undergraduate student. After consideration of need and availability of funds, an applicant statement expressing how the scholarship might be used to enhance professional development and student learning will be used to determine selection. The deadline for scholarship awards is May 1st for that year’s summer institute. In order to qualify, please complete the short online scholarship form.
