General Education

At Augsburg University, our general education requirements are designed for flexibility, helping students graduate on time while exploring interests through double majors, minors, or study abroad programs. This breadth of learning fosters both academic depth and personal growth.

What is General Education?

General education at Augsburg is a broad-based education designed to empower students for futures of leadership and service in our complex and ever-changing world. Built on the foundation of the liberal arts, our signature general education curriculum prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and values to be lifelong critical thinkers, informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, and responsible leaders, an intentional nod to the university’s mission.

Why is General Education Important?

General education empowers students to become responsible leaders by encouraging career exploration and adaptability. It builds critical thinkers by expanding their toolkit with diverse skills, from communication to problem-solving. Students grow into informed citizens by deepening their understanding of the world and its interconnected challenges. Through hands-on learning, they apply knowledge beyond the classroom as thoughtful stewards of their communities. Most importantly, general education provides the breadth of knowledge that complements specialized majors—because solving complex issues requires both depth and perspective.
