KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Jacob Frey, Mayor of Minneapolis:  Since his election as Mayor in 2017, Jacob has championed an agenda centered on increasing access to affordable housing throughout the city, strengthening community-police relations, and fueling economic growth through inclusive policies. From a record-setting investment in the city’s efforts to expand and preserve affordable housing to helping launch the state’s only black-owned financial institution to strengthening the Police Department’s body-worn camera policy, Jacob is delivering results and laying a strong foundation for Minneapolis.

WORKSHOPS

Thinking Together: The Power of Deliberative Dialogue

Facilitated by Elaine Eschenbacher, Director of Sabo Center for Citizenship and Democracy at Augsburg University
Deliberative dialogue is a form of discussion aimed at finding the best course of action. Leaders can use deliberative dialogue to productively engage a group to explore the most promising avenues for action on a complex issue. Deliberation breaks us out of the culture of polarization and extremism that seems to increasingly prevail in public discourse. It promotes learning and problem solving, listening and understanding across lines of difference and can lead to collective action. It can shift groups of people from seeing each other as adversaries to seeing each other as collaborators and uses facts and arguments as key tools for solving problems together. This workshop is designed to engage participants in a deliberative practice to explore a sample topic, the national debt, then consider the application of this process for other issues in our professional environments.

Enhancing Your Leadership Skills by Knowing Your Decision-Making Style

Facilitated by Tom Morgan, PhD, Professor of Leadership Studies at Augsburg University
The I Opt is a leadership assessment tool designed to help us understand how we gather, process, and act on the information that is all around us. This information shapes our leadership style. To effectively lead others, particularly teams, it’s helpful to understand the strengths and vulnerabilities of our own approach. This workshop will help you learn more about yourself, enhance your capacity to work in teams, and to use personal data to advance our ability to be effective.  All participants will complete a short online assessment prior to June 14 and will have a personal profile report available to them at the session.
