Overview
Namibia is a large and sparsely populated country on Africa’s southwest coast, a beautiful place named for the world’s oldest desert, the Namibia. This practicum explores the socio-cultural determinants of health, epidemiology, care systems (professional and traditional), and health policies within the context of Namibian history and globalization. This practicum’s prominent themes are understanding people’s realities while developing leadership skills that foster equitable use of resources to meet healthcare needs within communities.
Students are offered a variety of experiences to learn from the people of Namibia, including:
• Visit with Indigenous communities
• Experience a safari
• Explore healthcare facilities, both public & private
• Meet with Ministry of Health Officials
• Travel to Swakopmund, a coastal city (cultural guide on the genocide of Herero and Nama people)
• Time with grassroots, advocacy community organizations
