Volunteers Needed: Advent Vespers

On Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7, 2013, Augsburg will again host Advent Vespers at Central Lutheran Church, 333 South 12th Street, Minneapolis. This annual worship celebration welcomes nearly 10,000 people and we very much need volunteers to usher at all five services.

On December 6, services are at 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. Ushers are needed at Central one hour prior to each service. Ushering involves handing out programs, taking seating envelopes and opening and closing the doors at certain times during the service; clear instructions are provided. Ushers who volunteer at both services are provided a box dinner.

On December 7, services are at 2:00, 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. Again, ushers need to arrive at Central one hour prior to each service. A snack is provided between services for those who can volunteer at both the 2:00 and 5:00 services; a boxed dinner for those who volunteer at both the 5:00 and 8:00 services. Volunteers who can help with just one service are welcome!

Please contact David Hamm at hammd@augsburg.edu to volunteer.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

Group of Auggies stands in front of Old Science, those in front hold signs which together spell "thank you"Year after year we are consistently amazed by the faithfulness and generosity of our Auggie volunteers. Yet, upon reflection, we understand that Augsburg is the result of selflessness given from one generation to support the next one.

Auggies globally share in learning, living, discovering our gifts, and matching these gifts with the world’s most important needs. We as Auggies are called to question, to act, to serve our neighbor, and to make an impact.

To ensure that these uniquely Augsburg experiences endure for generations to come, we need support, and our volunteers understand this with exceptional clarity. We owe them a debt of gratitude for the way they deploy their energy and inventiveness in service to our college.

So to all of you volunteers, we extend our sincere thanks and our deep appreciation for everything that you do for the Augsburg community.

Auggie in Residence

Auggie in a suit
The Auggie in Residence program is another great opportunity for alumni and parents to visit campus to reconnect with the College and its students. Through this unique program, alumni and friends of the College are invited to speak at a fall or spring class, meet with student groups or associations,  assist students in the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work, or tell us where you wish to help.

If you think an Auggie in Residence experience is something you would enjoy and you want to share your time and talent, contact David Hamm via email at volunteer@augsburg.edu or by phone at 612-330-1329.

Augsburg Builds Connections

Key in a puzzle piece

Augsburg College has graduated more than 16,500 students since 1869, many of whom have ascended to the top of their respective fields. Recognizing the essential role career mentoring plays in higher education, Augsburg provides an opportunity for alumni, parent professionals, and friends of the college to be involved as mentors in the lives and success of Auggie students. While advising focuses on skills needed for academic success, career mentoring focuses on the important human relationships and resources needed for professional success.

The Augsburg Builds Connections (ABC) mentoring program is one of many ways which Augsburg parents, alumni, and friends of the college are able to give back to the college by supporting our current students. This volunteer driven program is designed to connect students with mentors who will provide them with the guidance, networking opportunities, and resources required to complete the complex puzzle. The flexible nature of the program lets both the student and mentor to connect via email, phone, skype, or face-to-face meetings.

If you wish to learn more about the Augsburg Builds Connections program or other volunteer programs please contact David “DJ” Hamm, Volunteer and Alumni Engagement Manager, via email at hammd@augsburg.edu or by phone at 612-330-1329.

Spirituality Event Inspires Learning and Reflection for Augsburg Women

Augsburg Women Engaged. Connecting. Learning. Giving. The recent AWE-inspired event Spirituality: Going Deeper. Insights from Christianity and Buddhism was exactly that – inspiring! St. Thomas Law Professor Susan Stabile shared her spiritual journey from her Catholic childhood in Brooklyn, New York to taking a vow as a Buddhist nun and back to where she is now, a practicing Catholic.

Augsburg Religion Professor Marty Stortz hosted the evening in a room filled with Augsburg alumnae and friends who were eager to learn and fascinated by Susan’s story.

After telling her story, Susan led participants in a Buddhist meditation exercise that she has adapted for Christian meditation, designed to send healing intentions to friends and family members who are suffering. This meditation is found in her book, Growing in Love and Wisdom: Tibetan Buddhist Sources for Christian Meditation, available on amazon.com.

Lee Furman ’61 enjoyed the evening and said about Susan Stabile, That woman is dynamite. I hope that she will also work with us for a retreat and of course we will all pay for that. Susan Stabile was just out of this world. I am enjoying her book. So it was just a perfect evening. Thank you.”

The AWE advisory council will explore options on recommendations for a half-day retreat with Marty Stortz and Susan Stabile within the next few months, based on a recommendation from the group.

AWE is a catalyst for tapping the potential for women to connect, learn, and give. We believe all women have knowledge, experience, and resources to share. Therefore, alumnae are invited to make meaningful connections with and for Augsburg’s AWEsome women by participating with an AWE Action Team. We welcome participation in whatever way best suits your interests, circumstances, and availability.  If you would like more information please contact Sara Schlipp-Riedel at 612-330-1178 or schlipp@augsburg.edu.
