I have received many numerous inquiries about shadowing during COVID-19. While most hospitals and clinics are unable to offer in-person opportunities, many schools have offered virtual sessions with their students and alumni. I often include announcements about these virtual opportunities in the newsletter so make sure that you check the content below.

Pre-Pharmacy Club
Interested in Pharmacy or attending PharmD school after graduation? Be a part of the creation of the Pre-Pharmacy Club! The objective will be to provide a forum for students to learn about preparing for PharmD applications, choosing the right Pharmacy school, and the many fields of practice surrounding Pharmacy through:
- Networking with peers, pharmacists, and pharmacy schools
- Resume and application building
- Meeting with PharmD students
- And other activities meant to facilitate the transition between undergrad and Pharmacy school

The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine is hosting another virtual event, “OMM at ICOM” on January 29, 2021 at 2:00 PM MST.

NIIMBL Experience
The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals offers college freshman and sophomores real-world insight into career possibilities in the biopharmaceutical industry through direct interactions with industry professionals. During a multi-week virtual program, students learn about the operations of large biomanufacturers, cutting-edge technologies of small companies, training and education paths from academic institutions, and how the federal government plays a role in bringing life-saving treatments to patients.
The program targets African American/Black, Latinx, and Native American students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and NIIMBL member institutions. It is open to students enrolled in any STEM-based major.

University of Michigan FCVC SURF
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, future plans are still uncertain, but the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center (FCVC) plans to offer a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) for the summer of 2021. The 2021 FCVC SURF program is expected to run between June and August, but exact program dates and format will be forthcoming.
Program Description
Each student will be matched, based on their interests, to a laboratory that is led by a FCVC faculty member. This collection of laboratories is involved in internationally recognized research in topics such as atherosclerosis, genetic cardiomyopathies, blood clotting disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, vascular biology, and heart failure. The stipend will be $4,000 for ten weeks of full-time work, typically starting the Tuesday after Memorial Day and ending the first week of August (exact program dates pending). The program includes scientific seminars, social events, and a two-day research symposium where fellows present their research to their peers and FCVC faculty and staff.

Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Summer Scholars Program
The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine will again host the Summer Scholars Program. The Summer Scholars program is a tremendous academic experience for underrepresented, or educationally or economically disadvantaged students to grow personally and be challenged professionally. The program replicates what will be experienced in the first year of medical school at OU-HCOM. Courses, taught by OU-HCOM faculty, and current medical students, include subject matter in gross anatomy, histology, immunology, biochemistry, integrated biomedical sciences, an introduction to the flipped classroom pedagogy and the HCOM curriculum. In addition, there will be workshops dealing with the admission process, learning strategies, time management and many other experiences relevant to the medical school experience. Given the COVID pandemic, Summer Scholars will be conducted in a safe, impactful, virtual format. We had great success with this format last year and look forward to the 2021 program.
The Summer Scholars Program is five weeks in length and includes a living allowance, and the potential for a guaranteed interview for the entering class at the medical school.

ATP BIO REU in Biopreservation Technologies
REU students will work in a university research lab on a project related to ATP-Bio’s science and technology along with a faculty advisor and graduate student mentor. Each student has a project of their own with specific responsibilities and deliverables. The program features professional and skill development opportunities, as well as social activities.

CQII AIDS Institute Summer Internship
Since its inception in 2004, the Center for Quality Improvement & Innovation (CQII) has provided leadership and support in quality improvement for federally funded HIV providers (Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program recipients), which includes state and city health departments as well as ambulatory health care clinics nationwide. The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, the largest federal program focusing exclusively on HIV/AIDS care, provides funding for ongoing HIV care to over 550,000 individuals, serving more than half of persons living with diagnosed HIV infection in the United States.

Pre-Dental Student Job Opportunity
Rojas Family Dental in Minneapolis is in need of an employee who is bilingual in English and Spanish ideally with an interest in dentistry. This is a paid position and previous experience is not necessary, willing to train. Primary duties will be as patient care coordinator (scheduling, accepting payments, confirming phone calls, explaining treatment plans). There will be some operatory turnover, sterilization, and chairside assisting as well. Hours are Friday 9-5, Saturday 9-5, Sunday 12-5, Monday 12-7 and Tuesday 12-7. There may be some flexibility in the hours. Please only inquire if you are fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish; this is an essential skill for the position.
