Counseling and Health Promotion - Personal Counseling
The center's counseling services support and assist students in coping with personal difficulties that may interfere with their personal or academic progress. Students may use counseling to engage in problem solving about a number of issues, including depression, anxiety, transition, relationship building, loneliness, and loss. The goal of counseling is personal growth, and there are many reasons students choose to participate in counseling. Students never need to feel that their problems are not important enough to see a counselor; if it is a concern to the student, it will be a concern to the counselor.
Confidentiality policy:
The counseling center is staffed by professional psychologists and services are confidential. Within ethical and legal guidelines, information shared with a psychologist cannot be shared with faculty, staff, or parents without the student's written consent.
Services offered include:

- Crisis intervention

To Schedule an Appointment With a Psychologist:
To schedule an appointment with a psychologist, call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, or stop in at 628 - 21st Avenue South (former Admissions House). Our Administrative Assistant, Dianne Detloff, will arrange for you to meet with a psychologist as soon as possible. Typically, you can make an appointment for the same week. If you feel that you are in crisis and need to see a psychologist immediately, please let Dianne know and she will arrange for you to meet with someone as soon as possible. If you are calling to schedule an appointment and get CCHP's voice mail, please leave a number and different times when Dianne can get back to you during the day to schedule an appointment.
What to Expect During Your First Counseling Appointment:
If you are using CCHP services for the first time, please arrive for your appointment 15 minutes early in order to complete some paperwork (a handout describing CCHP policies, and a brief personal information questionnaire).
During your first meeting with the psychologist, you will have a chance to talk about the concerns bringing you in for counseling. You may be asked for some background information as well, to help the psychologist better understand your concerns. You and your counselor will talk about what you are hoping to gain from counseling, and will decide together whether CCHP is the best place for you to help yourself. If appropriate, your psychologist may refer you to other resources on or off campus.
If You Need to Cancel an Appointment:
Counseling works best when you make a commitment to the process, so we ask that you keep all your scheduled appointments. if you are unable to keep an appointment due to illness or personal emergency, please call CCHP at 612-330-1707 as soon as possible to let us know. Often, if we have enough notice we can fill your appointment with another student in need.
