Emergency Contraception Resources

Birth control and testing for most sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are not covered under the Augsburg contract at Smiley’s Clinic.  Students who are uninsured can receive free or low cost sexual health services at the following clinics.  Smiley’s Clinic does provide birth control services and testing for STIs if you have insurance.

Red Door Services — Hennepin County Public Health Clinic — HIV/STD Testing Center and Pregnancy Prevention Services.  Located downtown Minneapolis (ten minutes away on light rail — Downtown East/Metrodome station)  Services are not free but no one is turned away for inability to pay.

Planned Parenthood — St. Paul Health Center    (Midway St. Paul, near Raymond Avenue Light Rail Station) Services provided even without insurance.   Walk-in emergency contraception, walk-in birth control, walk-in pregnancy testing.  STD and free HIV testing.    651-698-2406    Other locations of Planned Parenthood

Family Tree Clinic    Low cost birth control without an exam; free rapid HIV testing for uninsured patients (results in 20 minutes), comprehensive STI testing and treatment, annual exams, birth control, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and all options counseling.  Sliding fee scale.  Located Midway St. Paul, a few blocks from the Snelling Avenue Light Rail station.

Whole Woman’s Health of the Twin Cities     “Compassionate reproductive health care”; flexible scheduling; financial help; $20 walk-in emergency contraception.

Community-University Health Care Center — provides STI testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, family planning, and birth control in their medical clinic.  Culturally competent services (has staff who speak Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Vietnamese & other languages) .  If you do not have insurance, they will help you figure out what programs you might be eligible for, and will help you apply.  Located near the Franklin Avenue light rail station.

African-American AIDS Task Force provides culturally specific prevention, education, and services to people of African descent who are living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS.    HIV counseling, testing, and referrals.

Indigenous People’s Task Force    A Native American provider of HIV and sexual Health education and direct services to the Native community in Minnesota.

People’s Center Chicago Avenue (formerly Teen-Age Medical Clinic)  Pregnancy testing, birth control, and STI testing.  Sliding fee scale (minimum $20 per appointment but monthly $5 payment plan available).  Will help you apply for state and federal medical assistance programs.

Minnesota Family Planning Program provides free family planning services, including free birth control and yearly exams, if you qualify.  You can use ApplyMN to find out if you qualify (a secure online application for state and county services including payment of family planning services).
