Dear Music Alumni and Friends,
It is a busy season of recitals, concerts, guest artist and speaker visits, and, of course, ongoing classes in the Music Department. As I write, we are moving toward finalizing our national search for the Schwartz Choral Leadership position and the Music, Media, and Management position. Rafael Rodriguez (orchestra and jazz) has hosted guest artists from Latin America as well as a festival for high school students; Brian Lukasavitz (music business) is bringing Dessa and the New Standards to campus; we experienced our first “jazz brunch” during a chapel in January; we held two Music Exploration days for prospective students. More items of interest are included in this edition of Updates.
We are grateful for your interest, support, and enthusiasm for the work of the Music Department, and hope you can arrange to attend events (see our website calendar). As always, we value your recommendation to prospective students to consider Augsburg for music studies and participation.

Summer 2018 Professional Development Week for Music Educators
Daniel Albert (music, human development, and learning) has helped to create Augsburg’s Professional Development Week for school and community music educators (June 25-29, 2018, 9 AM – 3 PM). Topics and educators to include:
• Daniel Albert – Technology in Music Education
• Tim Buzza, Augsburg University and Thomas Edison High School (Minneapolis Public Schools) – Creativity in Music Education
• Adrian Davis, Roosevelt High School (Minneapolis Public Schools) – Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
• Sarah Minette, South High School (Minneapolis Public Schools) – Social Justice and Equity in Music Education
• Emma Moonier, Augsburg University – Working with Special Needs Students in Music Education Settings
Workshops will be applicable to ALL music educators and for ALL music learning contexts! Take home resources and develop materials to use in your classroom in the fall!
Two options: 25 clock hours certificate for educator licensure renewal OR 2 Augsburg graduate credits.
The Master of Music Therapy program started its 4th cohort in fall 2017!
The program currently enrolls students from the following states: California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and New Jersey.
Applications are being reviewed for the next cohort and applications are coming in from around the country including California, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Student and Ensemble Highlights:
After months of planning and hard work, we are thrilled to announce that Augsburg Music Theater has received full funding from the Augsburg Student Activities Council for a student-led production of The Drowsy Chaperone. Performances are March 29, 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lab Theater, 700 N 1st St, Minneapolis, Minn. Tickets are $10 for non-Augsburg students and can be purchased at the door. Advanced purchase will be available, and information is forthcoming.
The Riverside Singers will be participating in the annual WomanVoice concert on Sunday, March 25, 4 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel. This collaborative concert with the University of Minnesota Women’s Chorus and the Treble Choir from St. Paul Central High School will reflect on the theme of “Sanctuary,” in choral settings related to personal refuge, home, community, environment and political asylum.
Guest speakers from several community-based music programs, including the MacPhail Center for Music, American Composers Forum, and One Voice Mixed Chorus, spoke to Music, Human Development, and Learning students in Augsburg’s “Introduction to Learning, Teaching, and Technology in Music” course. This guest lecture series is part of Augsburg’s commitment to expand the conception of music education to include music learning and teaching experiences across the lifespan and incorporate community-based means of teaching music to all students.
The Augsburg Music Therapy Program was thrilled to have eight undergraduate music therapy students attend the National Music Therapy Conference.
Faculty Activities:
Nancy Grundahl was recently a clinician for the treble choirs of the western Twin Cities suburbs as they gathered for a morning of performance and workshops. Her compositions for treble voices – Oh Be Swift to Love written as a response to the present political strife, and Caritas Abundat, a piece based on a chant melody of Hildegard von Bingen – have been recently published by Alliance Music Press in Houston, Texas.
Daniel Albert (music, human development, and learning) presented a workshop for collegiate and novice music educators titled, “Teaching: It’s More Than Just Teaching,” at the MMEA Midwinter Clinic. Additionally, Daniel will present a research study in March on first-time cooperating teachers’ mentoring practices at the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference in Atlanta. Later this year, Daniel will be an artist-in-residence working with middle and high school musicians in several schools in New England.
Joan Hutton directed 7-8 grade band at the Minnesota Band Director Association’s State Honor Jazz Band on January 21. Kameron Markworth ’06 served as the rhythm section coach.
In October 2017, Professor Emeritus Robert Stacke ‘71 led the house band at the Somali Museum of MN’s 4th Anniversary Gala. The band included Julie Johnson ’98, Professor Emeritus Peter Hendrickson ‘76, Steve Herzog ’06, Kameron Markworth ’06, and the Minnesota Orchestra String Quartet.
Erika Svanoe co-presented at MMEA Midwinter Clinic “Rehearsal with an Impact” with conductor Kris Tjornehoh and composer Jack Stamp. The presentation featured Svanoe’s composition for band “Steampunk Suite” and creative rehearsal techniques specific to that piece. “Steampunk Suite” was also performed at MMEA by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wind Ensemble.
Svanoe’s new piece “Springtime Ride” for middle school band was premiered at MMEA at the MBDA reading session presented by the Encore Winds. The work was commissioned by the Minnesota Band Director Association.
In November 2017 Dr. Annie Heiderscheit and four of the Master of Music Therapy graduate students presented a continuing music therapy education course at the National Music Therapy Conference in St. Louis, MO. The 3-hour presentation was entitled, Developing a reflective practice to advanced clinical practice skills in music therapy.
Dr. Annie Heiderscheit also presented the following presentations at the 2017 AMTA conference: “Conducting clinical research: A guide through the research process and Assessing” & “Building your scope of practice: Expanding your clinical expertise”
David Myers (consulting chair) recently published a chapter on qualitative research methods in music, presented a workshop at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in conjunction with the international Reflective Conservatoire Conference, and led sessions for the College Band Directors National Association at Yale University and the National Association for Music Education in Atlanta. His consulting work included several days at Maryville University in St. Louis.
