Provost Kaivola talks to Star Tribune about first winter

Minneapolis Star TribuneAugsburg College Provost Karen Kaivola spoke with Star Tribune reporter Bill McAuliffe about the experiences of her first winter in Minnesota. Kaivola, who joined the College last summer after decades in Florida and spoke with McAuliffe for his story on the start of meteorological spring, said her first winter was “beyond the realm of her imagination” and that she is looking forward to spring, whatever that might mean. Certainly, Kaivola deserves kudos for surviving a winter that has nearly broken even native Minnesotans. Read the story on the Star Tribune website.

Joseph Erickson talks to Pioneer Press about teachers contract

PioneerPressThe St. Paul Pioneer Press spoke with Joseph Erickson, professor of education and former member of the Minneapolis school board, for perspective on the recent contract talks between the St. Paul Public Schools and the St. Paul Federation of Teachers. Erickson told reporter Mila Koumpilova that the agreement, which averted a strike, represents a “creative mix of contract changes, addendums to the contract and board resolutions.” Read the full story on the Pioneer Press website.

Alex Peterson '16 interviewed for The Scientist

The ScientistAlex Peterson ’16 was interviewed for the cover story in the February edition of The Scientist magazine for an article titled “Pain and Progress: Is it possible to make a nonaddictive opioid painkiller.” Peterson, a student in Augsburg’s successful StepUP program for students in addiction recovery, shared his story and perspective on opioids. Advisory: Dalai Lama presides March 2 at Tibetan New Year

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside at Tibetan New Year Celebration at Augsburg

WHAT:Thousands of Tibetan Americans will celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year, on March 2 at Augsburg College. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside over the Losar ceremony. It is the first time in the life of His Holiness, since exile, that he will observe Losar outside of India.

The Cedar, Augsburg receive one of six national grants

A grant awarded to The Cedar Cultural Center and Augsburg College will support a program to build cross-cultural awareness, knowledge, and understanding of Somali culture through music. One of only six grants of its type awarded in the nation, the $200,000 award was made as part of the highly competitive Building Bridges: Campus Community Engagement grant by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.

The grant will be used to launch a two-year project titled MIDNIMO: MUSIC FOR UNITY, CAMPUS, AND COMMUNITY.  Through Midnimo, the Somali word for “unity,” Augsburg students, Cedar Riverside residents, and the general public will engage in a series of educational and experiential events focused on Somali music. Event 1: Nobel Peace Prize Forum Keynote Address

SATURDAY, MARCH 1 | Security Check: 7:30 a.m., Program 9:40-10:20 A.M. | Minneapolis Convention Center

  • Description: His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will deliver the keynote speech at the 26th Nobel Peace Prize Forum at the Minneapolis Convention Center. His Holiness, the spiritual leader of Tibetans and Buddhists worldwide, will speak on topics of faith, peace, and human values. The speech will be delivered in English. The NPPF is housed and coordinated by Augsburg College.
  • Media Advisory: Read and print the media advisory here.
  • Media Credentialing: Credentialing closed on Wednesday, February 19. Only members of the media who received notice of official credential approval will be permitted entrance. A photo ID will be required to pick up credentials. Please also wear or bring the credentials issued by your employer. Confirmations and additional information will be emailed to editors, reporters, and photographers who receive credentials. If you do not receive a correspondence from Augsburg College by February 26 for this event, you were not approved for credentials. Credentials are not transferrable.
  • Parking: Parking is on your own. No special accommodations were made at this venue.
  • Security: All members of the media will be required to go through a security screening. All video cameras, still shot cameras, laptops, and any other recording devices or equipment will need to be placed in the media gallery for a security sweep. Event 2: Historic Tibetan New Year/Losar

SUNDAY, MARCH 2 Security Check: 6:30 a.m., Program: 9-11 A.M. Augsburg College 

  • Description: His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside over the Tibetan New Year/Losar ceremony being held in Augsburg College’s Kennedy Center. It is the first time in the life of His Holiness, since exile, that he will observe Losar outside of India. The event is being held by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota. Joe Erickson featured on KSTP 5

Joe Erickson, professor of education, was featured in a story about the impact of school cancellations due to weather on the learning of K-12 students. Erickson said “time on task” is key in student learning and that since schools have closed a total of five days, it may be beneficial for the state to push back standardized tests.
