UMN’s Sustainable Land and Water Resources REU

Sustainable Land and Water Resources Research Experience for Undergraduates is a community-centered and tribally focused summer program that explores the interactions between physical, natural, and social processes through the weaving of Indigenous knowledge with Western knowledge to advance scientific understanding and support tribal management decisions.

  • Provides transportation, food, and housing plus a stipend to all participants
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply for this program.
  • Open to undergraduate students majoring in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences and related disciplines

UMN Pathways to Research Program (PReP)

The Pathways to Research Program providers undergraduate students with knowledge, skills, and experience in translational science and health equity research through a structured core curriculum including a mentored research project, weekly training seminars, small group discussions, and a final poster to present research findings at the annual University of Minnesota CTSI Translational Science Symposium & Poster Session.

  • Seeking any applicants enrolled at colleges and universities with strong connections to Minnesota.
  • $600 weekly stipend for 12 weeks
  • 10 students selected
  • U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, and those lawfully in the United States on a non-temporary basis
  • Will be paired with a UMN or CTSI Hub Partner affiliated faculty mentor

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Internship program at The Hormel Institute allows interns to work with scientists on biomedical research projects.

  • 10-week paid summer internship
  • 40-hour week
  • Low-cost housing available
  • Work with scientists on biomedical research projects
  • Gain firsthand research and equipment experience not commonly available in undergraduate programs
  • Participate in weekly professional development activities
  • Build connections with esteemed scientists and fellow researchers in training
  • Present scientific research at a public event

NSF-REU / Lando / CSP SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM

The NSF-REU/Lando/CSP Program at the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry provides undergraduate students with an intensive summer research experience in chemistry.

  • 10-week paid summer research program
  • Full-time research (approximately 40 hours per week)
  • $9,747 stipend (paid at the beginning of the program)
  • On-campus or off-campus housing available (housing cost may be deducted from stipend for domestic students; covered with adjusted stipend for eligible international students)
  • Conduct hands-on chemical research under the mentorship of faculty and graduate students
  • Gain advanced laboratory experience and exposure to cutting-edge chemical research
  • Participate in professional and social development activities throughout the summer
  • Present research findings at a formal end-of-summer poster session

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA PHYSICS REU PROGRAM

The Physics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program at the University of Minnesota School of Physics and Astronomy gives undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research in a variety of physics fields under faculty mentorship.

  • 10-week paid summer research program (June 1 – August 7, 2026)
  • Full-time research experience (typically ~40 hours per week) with opportunities in areas like astronomy & astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, cosmology, high-energy physics, physics education, and space & plasma physics
  • $7,000 stipend to cover living expenses during the program
  • On-campus dormitory housing provided
  • Travel reimbursement (up to $700) included
  • Weekly seminars, safety and ethics training, and other professional development activities
  • Social and community events (museum visits, games, local excursions)
  • Participate in poster sessions and present research results publicly
  • Eligibility restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents (undergraduates who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree)
  • Students from underrepresented groups are highly encouraged to apply
