Strommen Executive Speakers Series to Feature John Taft, Chief Executive Officer at RBC Wealth Management

Strommen Executive Speakers Series John TaftFeaturing John Taft, Chief Executive Officer at RBC Wealth Management,
November 7, 2013, 5:00-6:00 p.m.,
Christensen Center, East Commons

“Stewardship: Lessons Learned from the Lost Culture of Wall Street”
Please join us on Thursday, November 7, for the first Strommen Executive Speakers Series event of the academic year. Our featured speaker is John Taft, CEO of RBC Wealth Management. A noted national speaker and author, Taft makes a compelling argument that Wall Street leaders and institutions experienced a failure to fulfill their stewardship responsibilities by putting their own interests before the interests of the constituencies they serve.

Taft defines stewardship simply as: “choice for service.” Personal insights and accounts of events from his life, as well as anecdotes from others, help illustrate the concepts of stewardship–and help bring what it means to be a steward to life in an exciting and intellectually stimulating way.

Light refreshments will be available prior to the event and free pizza will be served after the event. The event and pizza are free. Please register by November 4 by clicking here.

Exploring Your Leadership Style: Discover your Information Processing Preferences
Presenter: Tom Morgan
Kennedy Center, Room 303
5:30 p.m. social time with refreshments; 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. workshop

Who should attend? Individuals and/or teams who want to enhance their leadership skillsTom Morgan and effectiveness.

Discover your information processing preferences through I Opt. I Opt is a leadership assessment tool used in professional development that will help you understand how you gather, process and act on the information that is all around you. This information shapes the way you approach leadership. To effectively lead others, it’s helpful to understand the strengths and vulnerabilities of your own approach.

Prior to the workshop, participants will complete a short online survey (fewer than ten minutes). The results of this survey will be used to generate a personalized report that each participant will receive at the workshop. These Advanced Leadership Reports identify information processing preferences, providing insights into issues that people bring with them everywhere they go. Tom Morgan, a certified I Opt interpreter, will explain the I Opt model and help you get the most out of your individual report.

Registration

To participate in the workshop, please RSVP by e-mail to Patty Park at parkp@augsburg.edu by Monday, October 7. You will receive an e-mail reply with directions for taking the I Opt survey. You must be present at the workshop to receive the survey results. Space is limited, so register soon.

Augsburg Associates Appoint Three Alumnae to Board

The Augsburg AssociatesThe Augsburg College Associates is a service auxiliary of volunteers whose mission includes fundraising for special projects and scholarships in support of the College. The Associates’ commitment to the College is evident in their ongoing support through fundraising events including estate sales, Velkommen Jul, and the Scandinavian boutique. The funds raised throughout the year support special projects and scholarships.

On Thursday, September 26, the Augsburg Associates Board elected three alumnae to its board.

Emily Crook ’07 of Duluth, Minn., graduated from Augsburg College in 2007 with a BA in psychology. While at Augsburg she participated in softball, worked in admissions, and served as an orientation leader welcoming incoming Augsburg students. Emily, a fourth grade elementary teacher, is currently finishing her thesis for her master of arts in education at Augsburg.

Kathleen Gabrielsen ’80 is part of an Augsburg family which includes her late husband, Stephen ’63, daughter Elizabeth ’89, an artist, and son Joe ’91, a computer programmer. She is a former preschool teacher and is an artist working in jewelry and clay sculpture. Olivia “Livi” (Bylund) Smith attended Augsburg three years with the class of ’64. One of her three children, Heather (Wagner) Rand, is a 1985 Augsburg graduate. Livi was the children’s librarian in the Cloquet Public Library for 12 years. She has resided in the Cloquet and Duluth areas of Minnesota for the past 37 years.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

Group of Auggies stands in front of Old Science, those in front hold signs which together spell "thank you"Year after year we are consistently amazed by the faithfulness and generosity of our Auggie volunteers. Yet, upon reflection, we understand that Augsburg is the result of selflessness given from one generation to support the next one.

Auggies globally share in learning, living, discovering our gifts, and matching these gifts with the world’s most important needs. We as Auggies are called to question, to act, to serve our neighbor, and to make an impact.

To ensure that these uniquely Augsburg experiences endure for generations to come, we need support, and our volunteers understand this with exceptional clarity. We owe them a debt of gratitude for the way they deploy their energy and inventiveness in service to our college.

So to all of you volunteers, we extend our sincere thanks and our deep appreciation for everything that you do for the Augsburg community.
