Neighborhood Food Access

community meals

Brian Coyle Center

Two student leaders pack individual meals in Augsburg Dining Services kitchen.
Campus Kitchen student leaders pack meals with food rescued from the Augsburg kitchens.

Two to three times a week, Campus Kitchen serves a hot meal for youth at the Brian Coyle Center, creating a space for community connection in addition to providing a nutritious meal.

Soup for You

Any extra food from Augsburg Dining Services is rescued from the landfill and packaged up into individual meals to be distributed at Soup for You. Our student leaders also help out in the kitchen once a week!

Encampment Distribution

At the end of the week, the extra meals we receive from Kitchen Coalition, prepared by the Cheng Heng Restaurant, are distributed to Unhoused neighbors in the Cedar Riverside/Seward community. We try to give out at least one meal per person, along with bottles of water, snacks, hygiene products, and pain killers/medicine. It is a great way for the meals to get a second life, while also tackling food insecurities around our neighborhood.

Community produce distributions

Veggies for All

Veggies for All is a collaboration between Campus Kitchen, Health Commons, and Sanneh Foundation to distribute fresh produce and other groceries to our neighbors in Cedar-Riverside. This program runs every Thursday (packing) and Friday (distribution) throughout the year, and we welcome help from volunteers! Sign up for available volunteer opportunities here.

Greens for Good

Volunteer poses with many bags of fresh produce.
Campus Kitchen student leaders and volunteers pack 40-60 bags of fresh produce from Mill City Farmer’s Market each week to distribute for free!

Greens for Good is a collaboration between Campus Kitchen, Health Commons, and Mill City Farmer’s Market to purchase extra produce that MCFM vendors haven’t sold by the end of the day and distribute it to our neighbors in Cedar-Riverside. This program runs every Saturday during the growing season (June-October), and we welcome help from volunteers! Sign up for available volunteer opportunities here.

community garden

The Environmental Stewardship team is responsible for the Medtronic Foundation Community Garden at Augsburg University, beautifying the corner of 20th Ave and 7th St since 2007. The garden has four main goals: to provide a space for the community to come and learn together; to beautify the neighborhood and campus; to provide growing space for those without it; and to assist gardeners in providing themselves with a healthy diet. Learn more at the Community Garden website.

Frogtown Farm

The Cross Campus Food Access Coalition (CFAC) (comprised of Augsburg, Macalester, and Hamline Students) comes to visit the Frogtown Farm located in St. Paul. We meet every Thursday evening at our shared plot, where we grow all sorts of veggies like peppers, green beans, and much more! This is a new shift we started this year, and we plan to meet between the mid-summer to late fall harvests. It is a great spot to get your hands in the dirt and meet a bunch of people from different programs who are also working to tackle food insecurity across the Twin Cities. We will post different events at the farm on our Instagram (@ck.augsburg), so stay tuned!
