Augsburg College’s Rev. John Matthews, an adjunct faculty member at the Rochester location, was awarded the prestigious Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture Award on May 8. The first commencement celebrations of Minnesota’s private colleges takes place the weekend of May 3-4 at Augsburg College with ceremonies for traditional day undergraduates on May 3 and for students of the adult undergraduate, Rochester, and nursing programs and graduate students on May 4. The schedules and details about media photo opportunities are below.
May 3: Traditional Day Undergraduate Program
Ceremonies are in Si Melby Hall located on 23rd Avenue South. In the event of rain, students will line up in the basement of Si Melby and process up the stairs into the gym.
- 11:15 a.m. – Student Line Up, Christensen Center. Group proceeds, led by drummer, from Christensen Center down South 7-1/2 Street to Si Melby Hall. Public invited to help write history of City of Minneapolis
Historyapolis uses social media, public to write first history of City since 1940
Minnesotans are invited to make history by taking part in the innovative Historyapolis Project which is using Facebook, Twitter, and the public to write the stories of the City of Minneapolis for an upcoming book.
“The citizens of our state are hungry for complex stories that will help them understand how Minneapolis became the wonderful, complex and contradictory place that it is,” said Kirsten Delegard, founder of the Historyapolis Project and scholar-in-residence at Augsburg College. “This project, the first to undertake the City’s history since 1940, will create a central clearinghouse where people can find a full story of our past.” Continue reading “Public invited to help write history of City of Minneapolis”
‘Peer Gynt’ a Star Tribune ‘Stage Spot’
The Star Tribune included Augsburg College’s production of “Peer Gynt,” which runs April 10 through 13 at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, in its “Stage Spot” news column. The play marks the first time that the College has partnered with the University of Minnesota to deliver an innovative production that breaks rules and boundaries. Jennifer Simon talks about powwow with KSTP
Jennifer Simon, director of Augsburg College’s American Indian Student Services, talked to KSTP TV about the College’s 6th Traditional Powwow. Simon shared highlights of the powwow, including recognition of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community for a gift of $250,000 for endowed scholarships to support American Indian students. Star Tribune talks with Auggies about new thrift store
Mary-Laurel True, director of community engagement at Augsburg, spoke with the Star Tribune about Augsburg College’s involvement in the development of a thrift store founded and operated by young girls in the East African community. True was instrumental in helping the store get off the ground through her work with Augsburg MBA students who developed a business plan for the store founders. Devean George ’99 featured in Star Tribune column
A housing project being developed by Augsburg alumnus Devean George ’99 was one of several items featured in a Star Tribune business column. The piece described George’s recent talk at an annual fundraiser for a North Side land trust that works to help families buy refurbished homes. George, who retired from the NBA in 2011, is readying to break ground on a multi-use project that will offer retail space and apartments in the neighborhood in which he was raised. Michael Wentzel talks with KSTP TV about BBQ, beer, cancer
Michael Wentzel, assistant professor of chemistry at Augsburg College, spoke with KSTP TV about a new study that shows marinating meat in dark beer reduces the cancer-causing carcinogens that form when grilling. Wentzel said that a chemical in beer is shown to lessen the formation of harmful molecules during the grilling process and, therefore, can help lower the harm to people who eat grilled meats.
