What’s it like to transition from a large college in a small city to a small college in a large city?
According to Kristen Chamberlain, the newest addition to the Speech Communication Department, it’s great.
“I really love it here,” she says. “I love that it’s small. Every single person I’ve met says, ‘Welcome to Augsburg.’ It’s nice to come to a place where not only are you given the things you need to succeed, but you are also appreciated for what you are doing.”
After graduating from a high school class of 45 in Velva, North Dakota, Chamberlain headed to North Dakota State University in Fargo, where she enrolled in a “Direct to Doctorate” program that allowed her to begin her PhD program two days after getting her bachelor’s degree. On Dec. 18, Augsburg’s StepUP program was featured in a story on Inside Higher Ed, a daily online news site for higher education.
The Augsburg Symphony Orchestra will travel to Florida over semester break for two concert performances. On Jan. 8, the orchestra will perform in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla., at 4 p.m., at Times Square. On Jan. 10, they will perform in Naples, Fla., at 7 p.m., at Shepherd of the Glades Lutheran Church.
Augsburg College will host a Teach-In on Jan. 31, 2008 targeting a single issue — global warming solutions — as part of a national effort sponsored by Focus the Nation. The primary goal of “Focus the Nation: Augsburg College is to educate the Augsburg community about individual action and build momentum for permanent environmentally conscious practices and institutional actions. These actions include sustainable energy, zero-waste management systems, consumption awareness, and following the President’s Climate Commitment.
Minneapolis’ Fifth District U.S. Representative Keith Ellison is part of a four-person delegation leaving Jan. 6 for a 5-day visit to Norway to learn about Norwegian culture and Norwegian leadership in areas of peace negotiation, environmental policy, and healthcare issues.
The deadline for short-term study abroad applications is Feb. 1, 2008. With so many program options available, there is a good fit for every Auggie. Short-term programs offered this year are traveling to Thailand, Germany, Canada, France, Mexico, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
Though Dec. 20 marks the last day of final exams for Augsburg’s undergraduate day program, it is also the day for the school’s faculty and staff to celebrate the holiday season together at their annual Christmas party.
Melissa “Mel” Lee ’04 — one of the top infielders in the history of Augsburg College softball — is a very busy woman. She serves as an assistant coach for Augsburg’s softball and women’s basketball teams. She also serves as an instructor in the college’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) department, as equipment supervisor for women’s athletics and the HPE department, and as director of academic and support services for the athletic department.
For the second time in the 13-year history of the program, the Augsburg College women’s hockey team will be traveling to Europe, this time for a 10-day excursion to Germany, Austria and Italy in early January 2008.
Because of Augsburg’s commitment to service learning, the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars unanimously selected the college as its partner for a 2-week seminar that will run 1 week prior to and during the Republican National Convention, being held in the Twin Cities, Sept. 1 – 4, 2008. Augsburg will host 250 students from across the country who will interact with local and national politicians, journalists and others during the convention.
