Minnesota party caucuses offer chance to participate

caucusBy the time the general election rolls around in November 2008, the candidates and platform for each party will be set in stone. The Minnesota party caucuses, the majority of which will be held on Feb. 5 (a.k.a., “Super Tuesday”), offer us a chance to determine who will be on that November ballot.

Each political party sets the date and time for its precinct caucuses. Minnesota’s Republican Party, Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, and Independence Party will hold their caucuses on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. The Constitution Party of Minnesota will hold its caucus on Saturday, Feb. 2 at noon, while the Green Party will hold its caucus on March 4 at a time to be announced. Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 7

lunarOn Thursday, Feb.7, the Asian Student Association and Pan-Asian Student Services will sponsor a Lunar New Year celebration and panel discussion on campus.

The Lunar New Year is an Asian celebration which starts with the first new moon of the lunisolar year and continues until the first full moon (usually about 14 days). For many Asian cultures, the Lunar New Year is a celebration of change, a moment to renew oneself, and a time to welcome in the coming year with family and friends.

During Augsburg’s Lunar New Year celebration, speakers will explore the varied Lunar New Year traditions of Asian cultures, and a panel will be formed to answer student questions. The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the main lobby of the Christensen Center with a lion dance performance. Afterwards, from 5 – 6 p.m., the panel discussion, “Ethnic New Year Celebrations and Cultural Traditions,” will be held in the Marshall Room of the Christensen Center. After the discussion, a Lunar New Year-themed dinner will be served in the cafeteria.

The events are free to all Augsburg students, and all are strongly encouraged to enjoy the great dialogue and food. Please RSVP to thao@augsburg.edu or attend the panel discussion if you would like the free dinner.

Mardi Gras Madrigals return on Feb. 5

mardi2See the lowly raised up! See the mighty play the fool! See children command grown-ups to dance! At Mardi Gras Madrigals, the least shall be the greatest and the greatest shall be the least!

Mardi Gras Madrigals are a full medieval feast prepared according to medieval recipes (eaten without utensils, of course) to celebrate the midwinter carnival before Lent begins. At Augsburg, it features jugglers, storytellers, and period music performed by madrigal choirs from Mahtomedi and Saint Paul Central High Schools, and Augsburg’s own Cedar Sixteen men’s choir and Riverside Singers women’s choir. Challenges of combat veterans returning to college

militaryOn Tuesday, Feb. 5, Augsburg faculty and staff can learn about “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon,” the Minnesota National Guard’s reintegration program for returning soldiers. Chaplain John Morris (Lt. Col.) will explain how the program provides benefits and resources to ease the returnees’ reintegration into families and communities. The event takes place from 3:15 – 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

Nearly 80 military veterans or currently-serving military members are enrolled at Augsburg — one of the highest number at any private college in Minnesota. In order to help faculty and staff understand the relatively high risks for difficulty in college, especially among veterans returning from high-stress deployment, Morris — along with a mental health specialist and a returning veteran — will talk about the challenges and issues faced by these students. Focus the Nation on Jan. 31

focusAugsburg will host a teach-in on Jan. 31, targeting a single issue — global warming solutions — as part of a national effort sponsored by Focus the Nation. Across the country, more than 1,000 colleges, high schools, civic organizations and businesses will create a day of brainstorming and engagement in discussions concerning responses to environmental challenges. Focus the Nation identifies a clear goal: “Our intent is to move America beyond fatalism to a determination to face up to this civilizational challenge, the challenge of our generation.” Their hope is “to launch a discussion far-reaching enough to change the future.”

The teach-in schedule lines up with the daily class schedule, so that professors can take their classes to the presentations. Faculty, staff, and students from more than 20 departments will engage their audiences in a myriad of issues and perspectives. A panel of alumni, “Auggie alums and the Environment,” will also network with the campus community during lunch. All sessions are open to the public. Continue reading “Focus the Nation on Jan. 31”
