Urban High School Scrubs Camp 2014 celebrated its 5th year with 89 students, a 39% increase from 2013. Students learned about many different careers in the health sciences.

Scrubs Camp is hosted at Augsburg College, giving students the opportunity to experience daily campus life and learn about the college application process. More than 70% of the students attended camp on a scholarship.   Camp costs $430 for a 5-day, day camp experience. Funding from Boston Scientific provided full scholarships for 22 students.

Campers chose from over twenty different offered workshop sessions, attended four field trips, and actively participated in hands-on medical scenarios on the simulation bus. Courses included concepts of engineering, physical therapy, physician assistants, mental health speakers, biomedical technology, herbal medicine and more.

Support from Boston Scientific has greatly influenced the growth and impact of Urban Scrubs Camp. More than 300 students have participated in Scrubs Camp since its pilot year at Augsburg College. Students consistently reflect that it facilitates a greater understanding of the college application process and provides effective health care profession career readiness. Ninety-eight percent of students who attended camp this year reported that spending time on campus helped them better understand and visualize themselves at college and 99 percent reported overall satisfaction with their camp experience.

 

Paul Daniels ’79 Takes Design Expertise on a Baltic Cruise

Paul Daniels photoWhen Paul Daniels ’79, archivist at Luther Seminary, learned that “A Prairie Home Companion” would be hosting a cruise on the Baltic Sea in August, it caught his attention. He became even more interested when he discovered that Garrison Keillor and his “list of usual suspects” on the radio show would provide entertainment. There would be music, comedy, lectures, and fine dining—all in a potentially relaxing atmosphere, with stops at some of Europe’s most beautiful and historic settings—Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Dover, and Århus.

Daniels noted, however, that the planned lectures included nothing related to Scandinavian art and design. How can you visit these countries, he wondered, without exploring their rich art and design culture? So he put together a series of lectures and art, submitted a proposal, and pitched it. They liked it! And that’s how Daniels found himself aboard a luxury cruise ship in the Baltic in August, lecturing on Scandinavian design. Men’s Soccer Alumni to Name Locker Room for Rolf Eriksen

RolfCalling all Augsburg soccer players! A chance to honor Rolf Eriksen is available to us and this is what we all can do to help recognize Rolf for all he has done for the Augsburg Men’s Soccer Program.

If you keep up with the Augsburg Men’s Soccer Program, you have seen the recent improvements in the locker room. The idea has sprung up that naming this locker room after Rolf Eriksen would be the fitting recognition of a man that started this program, nurtured it through its infancy, and helped bring four conference championships to Augsburg.

All of the money raised to get this room named after Rolf goes directly back to the men’s soccer program. This money can be utilized to bring planned improvements to fruition—by purchasing much-needed equipment, such as heart rate monitors, players’ travel bags, updated cold weather jackets, and additional equipment for players and coaches. Augsburg Associates Celebrate 30 Years

The Augsburg Associates celebrate 30 years of fundraising and fellowship during Wednesday of Homecoming week with their annual meeting and afternoon tea. Mistress of Ceremonies Marty Stortz, Bernhard M. Christensen Professor of Religion & Vocation, will speak on the theme of “Women Who Serve.” The event is open to all.

Augsburg Associates, 90 members strong, serve the college and the people they assist by hosting estate sales. For their efforts in organizing, cleaning, pricing, and selling the household items, the Associates receive one-third of the sale proceeds. With three to six sales per year, they generate good will and resources, while raising funds to provide scholarships to Augsburg students.

In addition to the funds raised through estate sales and Associate membership fees, the Associates raise funds by annually hosting the Velkommen Jul brunch and Scandinavian boutique the first weekend in Advent, as well as a tea in the spring.

In 1996, the Associates set up an endowed scholarship fund. Earnings from the endowment provide a scholarship each year, and additional dollars raised throughout the year sponsor the Christensen Scholars.

Associates are graduates and/or friends of the College who may be family members of graduates, faculty, or staff, or who are simply impressed by the spirit of giving and want to be a part of it.

Social time begins on Wednesday, September 24, at 1:30 p.m., followed by the annual business meeting and afternoon tea at 2 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel and Arnold Atrium. Register for this event on the Homecoming Registration page by Sept. 12.

Auggies Give Back in Honor of their Reunions

Homecoming is a special time to commemorate Augsburg memories and reconnect with friends and classmates. Many alumni who are celebrating their 50th, 40th, 25th, and 10th reunions also decide to make a special gift to Augsburg in honor of their reunion and the Homecoming celebration.

The class reunion committees of 1964, 1974, 1989 and 2004 have each set goals to increase the number of donors and dollars given from their class in honor of their reunions. If you are a member of one of these classes, please watch for a letter from your reunion committee in the next few weeks highlighting these goals and consider making a gift in honor of your class reunion.

The classes of 1964 and 1974 have also given significantly to the CSBR Class Challenge—a challenge where each class year has set a goal of giving $1,000,000 or more to the campaign for the Center for Science, Business, and Religion. The class of 1974 has given more than $686,000 to the campaign, which is the sixth-highest amount of all classes; the class of 1964 has also given more than $161,000 to the campaign.

 

Auggie Hours and Fireworks!

Join your fellow Auggie alumni on campus the evening of Friday, September 26, for Auggie Hours. This Welcome-back Bash will be a great time for socializing and reuniting in the city where so many of us already live, work, and play. This is a casual social event—a time to catch up with friends, meet new people, and welcome the young alumni (2004-2014) back to Minneapolis as we kick off Augsburg’s Homecoming weekend. This year the class years of 1964, 1974, 1989, and 2004, in addition to Lutheran Youth Encounter alumni, will celebrate their reunions.

The evening will conclude with the Homecoming Fireworks over Murphy Park.

Music Therapy 40th Anniversary Celebration

On Friday, September 26, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Augsburg College Music Therapy program will be honoring the achievements of many of our Music Therapy alumni, welcoming Annie Heiderscheit, Ph.D., as the director of our new Master of Music Therapy program, and celebrating the beginnings of the “Ode to Joy” Music Garden on the Augsburg College campus. Register today.

Roberta Kagin, Ph.D., and Jana Skrien Koppula will co-host the event, and Karen Reed ’90 will provide gospel music on her saxophone. Doug Schmitt, vice-president of Schmitt Music Co., will be our emcee for the event. Other student musicians and alumni will also be featured.

Auggie Author Reading with Stephan Eirik Clark

StephanStephenAugsburg College Assistant Professor Stephan Eirik Clark will be the featured author at this year’s Auggie Author Reading. In July, Clark’s book, Sweetness #9, was recommended on the Comedy Central TV show, The Colbert Report. Since the show, Clark has garnered significant media attention by both local and national outlets. 

The Auggie Author Reading will be held in the Lindell Library on September 26 at 4:30 p.m. Register today to hear from Clark.
