On Tuesday, Nov. 6, President Pribbenow delivered a lecture, “Joining a College: Liberal Arts as Civic Education,” at United International College (UIC) in Zhuhai, China. He traveled to China with College of St. Scholastica president Larry Goodwin and Minnesota Private College Council (MPCC) president David Laird. The purpose of this MPCC-sponsored visit was to attend and speak at the inaugural MPCC/UIC Presidential Lecture Series.
Hosting the MPCC group in Zhuhai was Edmund Kwok, UIC vice chancellor, and Hong Kong Baptist University president and vice chancellor C. F. Ng, who also delivered an address. Last year, an educational partnership was launched between MPCC and UIC, the first fully-sanctioned liberal arts college to be created in China in more than 50 years. This year marks the fifth annual Turkeypalooza at Augsburg, where Campus Kitchens teams together with students, faculty, staff, and community members to collect ingredients, deliver, and serve over 600 meals to members of our community. This includes children, families, the elderly, recent immigrants, andhomeless persons.
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, Augsburg launched its 2007 community giving campaign for two weeks, ending on Nov. 15. This federated campaign includes opportunities to give to the network of organizations in both the Greater Twin Cities United Way and Community Shares of Minnesota. Augsburg’s campaign is coordinated by Sally Daniels, director of parent and family relations.
On Nov. 8, Augsburg College will hold a reception and celebration for students, faculty, and staff who are currently serving members of the military, their families, or veterans. This event will honor the military service of these members of the Augsburg community, give them a chance to connect with fellow veterans, and inform them of various benefits available.
The Masterworks Chorale of Augsburg, under the direction of Dr. Peter Hendrickson, will perform a “Requiem for All Souls” on Sunday, Nov. 4, 4 p.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
Nationally recognized travel expert Rick Steves will deliver a free public lecture on Friday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel of Augsburg College’s Foss Center.
The 2007 Anne Pedersen Women’s Resource Center and Koryne Horbal Lecture will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14 and will host nationally recognized actress and activist Jane Fonda for a convocation entitled “My Life’s Lessons About Sex and Gender.” The event will begin at 10 a.m. in Si Melby Hall and will be followed by a book signing at 11 a.m.
The 2007 Founders’ Day Lectures on Nov. 6 and 7 feature Dr. Carter Lindberg, scholar of Reformation thought. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m., Lindberg will speak on “Luther on Capitalism,” and on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 10:45 a.m., he will speak on “Luther on War.” Both will take place in Hoversten Chapel and are free and open to the public.
The American Indian Studies program kicks off its annual Film Series with Way of the Warrior on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Science Building, room 123 on the Augsburg College campus.
