This Thursday, Augsburg welcomes Steve Wehrenberg ’78, CEO of the Minneapolis-based ad agency, Campbell Mithun. His lecture on finding truth in advertising, which will begin at 5 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel in Foss Center, is part of the Strommen Speaker Series.
Walk past the student lounge in Christensen Center on any given afternoon, and it becomes clear that Asian American students make up a sizeable portion of the Augsburg student body. The lounge is a popular hangout for students—a place for them to study, relax, and connect with each other.
To hear some stories of Asian American students at Augsburg, attend the Augsburg Theater Department production of Inside Out. In collaboration with Mu Performing Arts and Pan Asian Student Services, Augsburg will present Inside Out Nov. 18-20.
Inside Out was created and is directed by Rick Shiomi, artistic director of Mu Performing Arts of St. Paul, Minn. The project began when Shiomi interviewed several Asian American students at Augsburg. Based on the interviews, Shiomi developed a series of short scenes that reflect their experiences. This Wednesday evening, film students and faculty from Hamline, St. Catherine, Macalester, St. Thomas, and Augsburg will gather at the first film festival of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC). The event, titled “Show Us Your Stories,” is the culmination of an effort on behalf of the colleges to collaborate on academic programs.
At the Minnesota High Tech Foundation awards ceremony held earlier this month, mathematics and physics major Jazmine Darden ’13 [left] was one of eight Minnesota undergraduate students to receive a Tekne Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to students seeking careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields or in STEM teaching.

This Friday, the Augsburg Muslim Student Association will celebrate Eid-al-Adha, or the “Festival of Sacrifice,” with a dinner and program. The Augsburg community is invited to attend to learn about this important festival and to celebrate with Augsburg Muslim students.

At the Anne Pederson Women’s Resource Center Koryne Horbal lecture, two women were recognized for their courage and tenacity with the first annual Courageous Woman Awards. These awards acknowledge and recognize women who see injustice or need, act on it, take risks in order to “do the right thing,” and raise their voices to champion women. Founded in 2011 by Friends of the Anne Pederson Women’s Resource Center at Augsburg College, the awards program recognizes women who courageously strive for social justice and peace on campus or in the wider community and whose efforts, be they small or large, make a difference to women. By his own admission, David Wilson was not born an artist. In fact, it was only after failing at college and going out into the working world that he began to discover a love of creating art. “I didn’t come to art early or naturally,” the artist and professor now says. “Everybody has a different timer connecting to what they really want to do in life.”
The occupants of one of Augsburg’s newest construction projects have claimed their cubicles and moved files and personal effects. As of October 31, the Office of Admissions—home to the staff of undergraduate and graduate admissions—is open for business on the lower level of Christensen Center.
Julie Edstrom, vice president of enrollment management, said the admissions staff has been talking for a few years about co-locating undergraduate and graduate operations. Be The Match, the national bone marrow donor registry, will be on campus on Wednesday, Nov. 2 for a bone marrow donor registry drive. This year, Be the Match will be aided by the Auggie baseball team, including assistant coach Troy Deden ’07, a transplant recipient.
Deden [pictured here] was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008, after he had graduated and had joined the Augsburg coaching staff. He went through treatment for eight months, missing an entire baseball season, and was in remission for nine months following chemotherapy. Then, the leukemia returned.
