"Crowd Control" Cheers on Men's Soccer

crowdIf you have gone to a soccer game in the past few years, you’ve seen the rowdy mob of students with blaze-orange T-shirts flaunting their school spirit

at every game.

Believe it or not, this wild bunch is actually an esteemed (yet unofficial) student organization called “Crowd Control.” Besides having loads of fun, Crowd Control is a prime example of unfettered, grass-roots school spirit at its best.

Crowd Control began two years ago when Grant Hemmingsen, Charlie Scott, Mitch Seesz and Ryan Stockhaus got a group of students together to attend all the men’s soccer team’s home games. The men’s head soccer coach, Greg Holker, has been encouraging the unofficial student group. Continue reading “"Crowd Control" Cheers on Men's Soccer”

Augsburg Sponsors Youth Center Basketball Court

muralOn Thursday, Oct. 4, President Pribbenow and Tom Morgan were esteemed guests at the dedication of the new Colin Powell Youth Leadership Center in South Minneapolis. Augsburg was one of eight colleges asked to sponsor a portion of the school’s basketball court with an urban mural. Retired-General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell participated in the dedication.

While the center bears Powell’s name, the idea for the facility comes from Urban Ventures Leadership Foundation, a Minneapolis-based economic development corporation. Continue reading “Augsburg Sponsors Youth Center Basketball Court”

Let the Auggie Adventure Begin!

home_stuThe Augsburg campus is bustling with excitement for Homecoming 2007 — and for good reason. This year’s Homecoming will be chock full of Auggie school spirit and fun activities.

The week will kick off on Monday, Oct. 8 with a student/faculty ultimate Frisbee game and, later, a coronation/pep rally complete with a fireworks display. Other events taking place throughout the week include the ASAC Variety Show, the infamous Powder Puff football game, campus-wide laser tag, an Auggie block party, and the Homecoming dance.

Third-year student Amanda Chaffin says, “I’m so excited to play in the Powder Puff football game. I think Homecoming is a great opportunity for the first years to meet alumni and mingle with older students so they can see what Auggie spirit is all about.”

Nancy Waldoch: Internship to Career

waldochAs a transfer student to Augsburg, I can honestly attest that another college would not have prepared me as well for this potentially rocky transition that I now find myself in – the transition from student to working adult.

In my three years at Augsburg I acted, directed, stage-managed, built sets and props, installed lights, ran soundboard, helped out in the costume shop, and more. Through Augsburg’s Artists Series, I got to hear the stories of Twin Cities theatre professionals from a variety of specialties, which helped expand my theatrical focus. I came to love and appreciate every aspect of theatre. Continue reading “Nancy Waldoch: Internship to Career”

Kyle Loven: From Backyards to Backstage

lovenHaving the opportunity to work with a professional theater company before you’ve even graduated from college is something you don’t think twice about. Unless you’re me.

By having two internships with two vastly different Minneapolis theater companies, Open Eye Figure Theatre and the Jungle Theater, I was given a unique chance to study what lies ahead while I was still studying for finals.

Internship #1

Traveling around the Twin Cities in an old white van crammed to capacity with puppets is precisely what I never dreamed I’d be doing. Well, maybe in a dream, but not consciously. Continue reading “Kyle Loven: From Backyards to Backstage”

Augsburg Joins National U-CAN Initiative

ucan_final2Augsburg College is part of a national initiative that provides prospective students and their families with public information on more than 565 college and universities across the nation. The web-based component of this initiative, called U-CAN, was developed by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and will be available to the public Sept. 26.

This web site will provide students and their families with concise, consumer-friendly information on individual private colleges and universities across the country. The college profiles include information on admissions, enrollment, academics, student demographics, graduation rates, most-common field of study, credit-transfer policy, accreditation, faculty information, class size, tuition and fee trends, price of attendance, financial aid, campus housing, student life, and campus safety.

“U-CAN allows our colleges and universities to be transparent,” said President Paul Pribbenow. “This is about pursuing accountability for our work as colleges and universities.”

There is no fee to access the U-CAN database. To learn more about U-CAN, visit www.naicu.edu

Promising Future for Inside Augsburg

new_lookA new look for Inside Augsburg launches today, echoing Augsburg’s energetic urban spirit. The design change is just one part of a new marketing initiative aimed at telling the Augsburg story and celebrating what makes the college distinctive.

President Pribbenow named this effort the Augsburg Promise project because its key goal is to ensure consistency between the promises that the college makes about the Augsburg experience and the actual experiences of students and the rest of the Augsburg community.

The Augsburg booth at the Minnesota state fair, new recruitment materials and the Auggies Days service T-shirts also featured the new look to better communicate the Augsburg Promise. The marketing initiative goes beyond logos and advertising, however, to shape the many ways in which the college expresses its identity and mission. For example, campus signage and aesthetics, the campus visit experience, distinctive events such as orientation and homecoming, and even campus policies are being reconsidered in light of the messages they send about the College.

The redesign of Inside Augsburg is just one of the first ripples of the Augsburg Promise initiative – more changes are on the way.
