If this is your first-time to getting a job in the United States, you will need to apply for a Social Security Number. ALL F-1 students who apply for an SSN will need to have AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT before they can apply.
As an F-1 student, you will need the following documents to apply for a Social Security Number:
- Your valid Passport
- Your current I-20
- Your most recent I-94 (get a copy of your electronic I-94 record)
- The Augsburg On-campus Employment Verification Letter is signed and dated by your employer and an ISSS advisor at Augsburg University
- Your application (make sure you bring either the Online Control Number (if applying online), OR your SS-5 FORM (see below).

The online option is easy to complete, and once you have successfully submitted your application you will receive an Online Control Number. Make sure you record the number or take a screenshot of the notification. You will need to show up at the SSN Office within 45 days of your online application.

If you choose NOT to apply online, make sure you bring the SS-5 Form with you to the SSN office.

(1) There is no fee to apply.
(2) Twin Cities residents must use the Social Security Card Center to apply. Make sure to get a receipt when you visit in person.
(3) Please do not send social security numbers or claims information over the internet or via. It is not secure to do so.
