Social Security Number (SSN)

If this is your first-time to getting a job in the United States, you will need to apply for a Social Security Number. ALL F-1 students who apply for an SSN will need to have AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT before they can apply.

As an F-1 student, you will need the following documents to apply for a Social Security Number:

  • START YOUR APPLICATION 
There are TWO ways to START your application:  
  • # A: ONLINE Application (recommended by the SSN Administration as it speeds up the process)

The online option is easy to complete, and once you have successfully submitted your application you will receive an Online Control NumberMake sure you record the number or take a screenshot of the notification. You will need to show up at the SSN Office within 45 days of your online application.

OR

If you choose NOT to apply online, make sure you bring the SS-5 Form with you to the SSN office.


  
  • SHOW UP AT THE SSN OFFICE
To COMPLETE your application, you will NEED to show up in person at the SSN office.
The office is currently open between 9 am and 4 pm Monday – Friday. Appointments (without reservation) are accepted, but we advise you to call ahead and make a reservation at this direct number 1.888.847.0392.
Bring your necessary paperwork (see first section above) and be prepared for a possible long wait. You may have to collect an appointment ticket and come back later.

 
  • WAIT FOR YOUR SSN CARD to ARRIVE 
Once you have completed your application (Step #1) and visited the SSN office (Step #2) you will have to wait for your SSN card and document to arrive in the mail. Make sure you give them your correct address (and make sure you will not change your address for the next 60 days).
When you have a SSN number, please contact the HR office at Augsburg. Stop by their office in Memorial Hall.

Social Security Card Center in Minneapolis 

 

(1) There is no fee to apply.

(2) Twin Cities residents must use the Social Security Card Center to apply. Make sure to get a receipt when you visit in person.

(3) Please do not send social security numbers or claims information over the internet or via. It is not secure to do so.
