UIC students immersed in Minnesota culture

chinaThe 12 students visiting Augsburg from United International College in Zhuhai, China, find Americans friendly and polite, and believe they exercise more in a healthier environment than found in China. And baseball games, which aren’t found in China, have been exciting.

The students, ages 19-22, arrived in Minneapolis on July 2, just in time to meet American culture at a Fourth of July picnic on Nicollet Island, complete with hot dogs, potato salad, and fireworks. The students are enrolled in an Augsburg summer session course and are participating in a program on Minnesota history and culture. Before returning home on August 7, they will complete a project about Minnesota and Augsburg that they will present in China. Continue reading “UIC students immersed in Minnesota culture”

URGO Summer Research Oral Presentations

urgo_researchThis week, some of Augsburg’s undergraduate researchers will share the work they have been engaged in over the summer.

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) provides summer research grants for students interested in graduate or professional study. The program encourages undergraduate students to conduct research because it displays an understanding of current questions in a field, the ability to collaborate with others, and the persistence necessary to meet the demands of graduate study. Augsburg’s Bloomington Center is open for business

bloomingtonFor more than 25 years, Augsburg College has provided working adults with the opportunity to earn a private liberal arts degree and, in turn, change their lives.

This fall, adult learners who begin their college careers at Normandale Community College in Bloomington will have another model and location available to take that associate’s degree and finish their bachelor’s degree.

After launching an inaugural MBA cohort at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Bloomington in January, Augsburg is expanding its adult offerings in the southwest part of the Twin Cities. Continue reading “Augsburg’s Bloomington Center is open for business”

Knowing and serving our neighbors

juventinoThis summer Juventino Meza-Rodriguez has been getting to know Augsburg’s neighbors, and the neighborhood, on a much deeper level than some students usually do.

For his URGO research project, titled Augsburg College Maps and Papers, Meza-Rodriguez is exploring the relationship of the College to the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, examining the history, growth, and present relationships. His goal is to identify best practices for colleges and universities that seek to maintain mutually beneficial relationships with their surrounding communities.

Meza-Rodriguez initially sought to determine whether Augsburg really was serving its neighbors, particularly the immigrant communities in the Cedar-Riverside area. “I have been a critic of Augsburg in this area,” he said. Continue reading “Knowing and serving our neighbors”

Getting students into the lab

lsampTwo first-year students, Fadli Mohamed and Makia Jama, spent four weeks in May testing for bacteria in the women’s locker room at Augsburg. They learned a great deal about microbiology from biology professor Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright and whetted their appetite for more research. This project was funded through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). On Thursday, July 9, the steering committee of the North Star Alliance, which administers the LSAMP program in Minnesota, will meet at Augsburg College. The best dad in the world

irvine_fatherLast Saturday, English professor Colin Irvine threw out the first pitch at the Twins game versus Houston. It wasn’t because he’s an especially talented pitcher or because he’s thinking of making a career change. He was selected as Father of the Year by the National Center for Fathering and was honored by the Twins prior to the game.

Irvine’s son Caleb, a second grader at St. Dominic School in Northfield, submitted an essay titled “What My Father Means to Me” this past spring. Out of 23,000 essays submitted, Caleb’s was chosen and his dad was eventually named Father of the Year in Minnesota. Colin and Caleb were invited to the Twins game and received a trophy and a $1,200 grand prize. Continue reading “The best dad in the world”

It's never too late to learn something new

rich_osbornRich Osborn had accomplished a lot by the time he retired in 1999.

He served his country during the Vietnam War. He and his wife raised three kids. He flew as a pilot for Northwest Airlines for 33 years, retiring as a 747 pilot.

But he never earned a college degree. That, however, will change on Sunday.

While each of the 167 undergraduate students eligible to go through commencement on Sunday has their own story, the 69-year-old Osborn will certainly be among the oldest Augsburg for Adults students to ever graduate. Continue reading “It's never too late to learn something new”

Future Auggies get an early start

vento_auggiesEarly this spring, some future Auggies started on their path to college when they were adopted by the Augsburg College admissions staff and by Auggie Eagle.

Anne Gardner, a first grade teacher at Bruce F. Vento Elementary in St. Paul, contacted Carrie Carroll, assistant vice president of admissions asking if Augsburg would be a benefactor to her class and adopt her first graders.

“We agreed to sponsor her classroom and the connection has blossomed,” said Carroll.

Last year, each class at Vento Elementary adopted a college or university to represent his or her classroom. Gardner chose Augsburg in part because her son, Sam Smith, is a student at the College. Students learned about Augsburg, including the fight song. Carroll said the students have Augsburg postcards and pictures in their classroom and they each made their own Auggie pennant to take home for the summer.
