A long Augsburg history

danielsfamilyYou could say that the Daniels family has a long history with Augsburg. If you’re a visual learner, it might help to grab a pencil and paper and draw a picture as you read.

Sally Daniels graduated from Augsburg College in 1979. Sally’s daughter Kristin graduated from Augsburg in 2009. Sally’s other daughter Maren is a junior at Augsburg.

Kristin and Maren’s paternal grandmother graduated from Augsburg. So did three of her four children: Paul (Kristin and Maren’s dad) as well as his sister and brother. Paul’s brother also met his wife here. Continue reading “A long Augsburg history” →

Auggies put their history skills to work

Three hundred senior high students from metro schools attended regional History Day competition at Augsburg last week.

History Day each year involves more than 30,000 junior and senior high students across Minnesota. Students select a topic to research around a theme and feel history coming alive for them as they develop poster displays, performances, documentary films, websites, or research papers for competition. Back in the classroom

bill_greenBefore the semester began, history professor Bill Green spent some time last week getting re-acquainted with his Memorial Hall office. After a four-year absence, he noticed how the ivy now covers his window. He enjoyed the familiar feel of his chair and discovered a book he had been searching for sitting on his bookshelf.

In January 2006, Green was asked to step in as interim superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools to begin to restore stability in the district at a difficult time. Fulbright Scholar will teach in Malaysia

macaulay_fulbrightKatie Macaulay ’09 didn’t know much about the Fulbright Scholarship program last spring. She had heard about the program, but kind of dismissed it as a realistic possibility.

“I thought it was a scholarship of the Ivy League, I thought it was out of reach,” Macaulay said. “I’m a small town girl from Minnesota.”

But something happened one day last April when Macaulay was studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She hopped on her computer, logged in to Inside Augsburg to check her e-mail and stumbled across the story of how fellow Auggies Ashely Stoffers and Erin Olsen had been awarded Fulbright scholarships. Exploring our designed environments

designed_enviroWhat could be better than a summer school class with weekly field trips?

Art history professor Kristin Anderson’s Designed Environment course uses art and architecture to study the history of Minneapolis and St. Paul. On weekly outdoor excursions, students explore buildings, parks, churches, and museums to learn about architecture, landscape design, and urban design and their evolution throughout history.
