Advisory: Global Leaders Meet Sept. 15-16 in Minneapolis for Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Bridging divisions through dialogue will be focus of leaders, experts

(MINNEAPOLIS) — The 29th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum, an international peace congress, is September 15-16 in Minneapolis. The 2017 Forum will focus on dialogue as a bridge to cross lines of difference on a range of contentious issues, from instability in North Africa and the Middle East, to gun violence reduction and the partisan “Red-Blue” divide in the United States. The Forum will also honor the 2015 laureate, the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, recognized for its work toward building a pluralistic democracy in Tunisia.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

Sept. 15

9 – 10:45 a.m. – “The Power of Dialogue: A Conversation with the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet.” Quartet members Mohamed Fadhel Mahfoudh, Hassine Abassi and Abdesattar Ben Moussa will explain how they brought together parties in a deeply divided country to forge a new democracy in the wake of the Arab Spring.
1:45 – 3 p.m. –“Health Care and Peace Building in Africa: Charting a Path Forward.” Panelists including Barbara Bush, CEO of Global Health Corps, will discuss improving health care delivery in Africa from the perspectives of non-profit, private sector, academic and other stakeholders.

Sept. 16

11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – “Gun Violence Prevention: Prospects for Progress.” Former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords and Capt. Mark Kelly will discuss their work on efforts to reduce gun violence and the pressing aspects of that work in light of recent political changes.
7 a.m. – 6 p.m. – “Concentric Dialogue” art installations. In the spirit of fostering engagement, local and national artists have collaborated to create an outdoor exhibition of installations across the Augsburg University campus. Free and open to the public on September 16 and 17.

Teachers learn coding through Augsburg College program, KARE 11 reports

KARE 11 news recently aired a segment covering “Makers: Small to Big,” a series of workshops sponsored by the Augsburg College physics department. The workshops are open to the public but are designed to help educators incorporate hands-on physics and computer programming projects into their classroom activities.

The segment featured a coding workshop led by Nora Helf, a Master of Arts in Education student, who saw teachers using software to coordinate blinking LED lights. Helf was assisted by 10-year-old programmer Jack Tavakley who demonstrated some of the projects he has made.

Local news outlets include Augsburg College’s MLK Convocation in holiday event coverage

Several media outlets have recently published curated lists of local events scheduled in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which takes place on Monday, January 18. The lists published by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Minnesota Public Radio News each included Augsburg College’s MLK Convocation, an annual event that honors the legacy of King with notable speakers addressing topics of race and social justice.

This year’s convocation will feature Chuck D, leader and co-founder of legendary rap group Public Enemy, author of two critically acclaimed books, and a political activist, publisher, radio host, and producer. He will give a presentation called “Race, Rap, and Reality: Supporting Our Youth in the Spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as They Face the Unique Challenges of Today.”

Auggies, public invited to presentation on education, innovation, and imagination

(MINNEAPOLIS) –Actor, director, writer, producer and educator LeVar Burton, best known for his roles in Roots, Star Trek and Reading Rainbow, will share with the Augsburg community the importance of turning STEM into STE(A)M – integrating science, technology, engineering and math with the arts and design.

Burton will present on Feb. 13 for Scholarship Weekend, “You Can be Anything: The Importance of Education, Innovation, and Imagination.”

The Scholarship Weekend event is built upon the successful model used during 2015, in which Bill Nye “The Science Guy” spoke to a packed house of more than 2,000 prospective students, their families, members of the Augsburg community, and the public.

During the 2015 Scholarship Weekend, more than 175 students had the opportunity to be challenged by deep questions of planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness, and more.

Participate in Feb. 24 photo shoot to tell the world how you foster peace building

Join the Nobel Peace Prize Forum #peaceitforward campaign to tell the world how you build peace.

You’ll become part of an international video and social media campaign in partnership with the internationally renowned Robert Fogarty of DearWorld.me, a portrait project that unites people through pictures, to raise awareness and grow involvement in peacemaking. In addition the video will be shown to an international audience at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum being held from March 6-8 in Minneapolis.

To become part of the campaign, simply stop by Augsburg College to have your photo taken. Be ready to answer the question of how you build peace and how you make a difference. Maybe you serve meals to the hungry, mentor children or serve on a nonprofit community board. Perhaps you work as part of a restorative justice program, are in a Rotary group that conducts projects across the globe, or help out an elderly neighbor. Peace building takes on many forms, small and large, and we want to capture what you do that makes a difference in your community, your state, our world.

A photographer will take a professional-quality, digital photo and a photo with your cell phone that you can post to social media. It’s your chance to tell the world why peace matters.

‘The Science Guy’ talks Feb. 14 on how science can save the world

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” will share his love for science when he speaks Feb. 14 at Augsburg College in an address that is open to the general public. Nye, who will be on campus for the College’s Scholarship Weekend, will speak with academic depth and humor about planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness and more in his address “How Science Can Save the World.”

Who

Bill Nye is a mechanical engineer who wants the world to know and appreciate the passion, beauty, and joy (the P, B & J) of science. Nye’s show, “Bill Nye The Science Guy,” has garnered 18 Emmy awards. Nye won seven of those Emmy awards as host and head writer of the show. These days, Nye travels the globe exhorting audiences to change the world. He has a day job as the CEO of The Planetary Society, the world’s largest non-governmental space interest organization. Nye’s newest book, “Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation,” was released in November.

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” will share his love for science when he speaks Feb. 14 at Augsburg College’s Scholarship Weekend in an address that is open to the general public. Nye, who will talk about “How Science Can Save the World,” will speak with academic depth and humor about planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness, and more.

“We’re excited to host Bill Nye during our Scholarship Weekend when bright students from across the United States visit campus to compete for our top academic scholarships,” said Augsburg College President Paul C. Pribbenow. “We want to give these scholarly, prospective Auggies the chance to grapple with some of the world’s deepest questions so they can experience what Auggies are called to do each and every day.”

During the 2014 Scholarship Weekend, nearly 100 students and the public had the opportunity to be challenged by questions of compassion and humanity posed in a talk by His Holiness the 14^th Dalai Lama.

Speaker event provides opportunity for community engagement, civic dialogue

As an academic institution, Augsburg College seeks to provide students an open platform to learn, listen, and engage through civil dialogue on a wide range of topics and with speakers from many backgrounds.

Stanley Hubbard, the chairman of Hubbard Broadcasting, will speak to a sold-out event at Augsburg College at 5 p.m., November 13, in Sateren Auditorium.

The event is part of an ongoing executive speaker series that provides an open platform for students to hear about the vocational path of Minnesota executives and to have the chance to ask questions that sometimes are difficult or that may come at times that are difficult based upon current events or for other reasons. This series typically is open to alumni and the general public.

Hosting a speaker on campus is not an endorsement of a speaker’s comments or business practices. The November 13 event is a unique learning opportunity for our community to engage with a topic that is in the news right now and wrestle – first-hand – with very important ideas and issues relevant to today’s world. This topic has engaged people throughout the nation in talking about issues related to race, power, and ethics. It is a unique opportunity for our community to ask questions about the situation and to practice civil dialogue.
